Ducks Fall in Big Ten Opener
03/12/25 | Women's Lacrosse
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon lacrosse team dropped its first game of the season on home turf, falling 20-6 to No. 20 Ohio State in the first game of the Big Ten Conference schedule on Thursday night.
The Buckeyes (7-0, 1-0 Big Ten) outshot the Ducks (5-3, 0-1 Big Ten) on the night 30-14, with 26 of those going on goal. The Ducks kept it close in the opening frame, trailing just 6-3 after 15 minutes, but a 13-1 scoring run between the second and fourth quarter allowed Ohio State to take control of the game.
Gabby Santucci led the Oregon offense with four goals, matching her career high set last time out against San Diego State. The junior has scored 11 goals in her last three games, tied for the most by any Duck during that stretch. Rachel Pallo led the UO defense with three caused turnovers and posted a game-high seven draw controls, and the Duck goalkeepers combined to make six saves.
The Ducks were slowed by 24 fouls and a season-high 20 turnovers.
How It Happened: Ohio State opened the scoring with two early goals, but Santucci was able to answer with her first of the night off of a free position attempt. After another pair of Buckeye scores, Kate Shields made an impressive save, launching an Oregon breakaway that Emma Ing capitalized on with a free position goal of her own. Ohio State responded with two more goals before Santucci found her second of the game.
The Buckeyes started the second quarter on a 6-0 run before Santucci tallied her hat trick on another free position shot four seconds before the half. The offenses slowed in the third quarter as the Ducks held Ohio State to three goals but were unable to find one of their own. Paige Crowther made three of her four saves in the period and caused a turnover.
Ohio State capped its second 6-0 run with three goals to start the quarter before Lyla Hurley scored for the Ducks. Santucci netted her fourth with 90 seconds left to play after another pair of OSU goals.
Notable: Rachel Pallo has now tallied 150 career draw controls and sits just seven shy of passing Jana Drummond, twin sister of head coach Jessica Drummond, for the fourth most in program history.
Up Next: The Ducks will take on Rutgers on Sunday at Papé Field (noon, B1G+).
