02/16/25 | Women's Golf
PALM DESERT, Calif. - The Oregon women's golf team extended its lead to 12 strokes on Sunday after carding an 8-under 276 for the second straight round in the Alice & John Wallace Classic at Monterey Country Club.
All five players in the lineup shot par-or-better in round two for the No. 5 Ducks, who are 12 strokes up on No. 3 USC (-4) and 22 strokes ahead of third-place San Jose State (+6) with 18 holes remaining.
Oregon was once again led by star sophomore Kiara Romero, who fired a second straight 3-under 68 to take sole possession of first place individually at 6-under par. Sophomore Karen Tsuru and freshman Suvichaya Vinijchaitham are right behind Romero in a tie for second at 5 under, after each finished Sunday with a 2-under 69.
Sophomore Ting-Hsuan Huang also came in under par with a 1-under 70 to round out the counting scores, and freshman Tong An finished with an even-par 71. Sophomore Darae Chung had her best round of the week while competing as an individual, recording a 2-over 73.
"Another really impressive round by our team today," head coach Derek Radley said. "I thought all six of our ladies played well and we've put ourselves in a good position going into tomorrow. We need to stay aggressive and continue to attack this golf course."
How it Happened: Round two began with a shotgun start, and Romero got her day startede with a birdie at No. 2 and quickly added another at No. 4. A birdie at No. 8 got her to 3 under, but she had rare back-to-back bogeys at No. 11 and No. 12 to move back to 1 under. The 2024 first-team all-American bounced back quickly with birdies at No. 14 and No. 16 before finishing her round with three straight pars.
Romero's 68 is her fourth consecutive sub-70 performance, as well as her sixth of the season and 14th of her career. The San Jose native has now shot par-or-better in 35 of 46 career rounds as a Duck.
Tsuru shot in the 60s in consecutive rounds for the first time in her career, using a fast start and a strong finish to come in with a 69. She birdied two of her first three holes to get to 2 under, but then was 3 over across her next 10 holes. She got those three strokes back quickly, making three straight birdies between No. 14 and No. 16 before finishing with back-to-back pars.
Vinijchaitham got off to a bit of a slow start, sitting at 2 over through her first seven holes. She followed her first birdie of the day at No. 8 with six consecutive pars, and then ripped off three straight birdies of her own to get back to 2 under. The freshman has now shot under 70 in three straight rounds and has four sub-70 performances on the season.
Huang had one of the cleanest rounds of the day, making a team-high 15 pars while adding a pair of birdies against just one bogey. She was at even par through 17 holes before ending her day with a birdie, shooting under par for the second time this season.
An's score didn't count towards the team total, but she made four birdies of her own and bounced back from a double bogey at No. 7. She made three birdies in four holes after being 3 over through 13, finishing at par-or-better for the sixth time so far as a freshman.
