Shorthanded Ducks Fall at Rutgers
09/19/24 | Women's Soccer
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Oregon lost to Rutgers 3-0 Thursday at Yurcak Field, but also showed some resilience in the face of adversity.
The Ducks were down two goals at halftime and then had to play most of the second half shorthanded after defender Karolina Jasaityte was issued a red card for interference in the 57th minute.
Despite the disadvantage, Oregon kept the Scarlet Knights off the scoreboard until the final minutes of the match and the Ducks created some scoring chances of their own.
How It Happened: Rutgers (6-1-1, 2-0-0) took a 1-0 lead with a goal in the eighth minute but the Ducks had opportunities to answer.
Taylor Bryan came on as a substitute in the 18th minute and nearly tied the match in her first three minutes of field time. She received a pass from Lauren Kenny at the top of the Scarlet Knights' box and chipped a shot on net, but RU goalkeeper Olivia Bodmer was able to make a sprawling save.
The Scarlet Knights then found the net again in 23rd minute and led 2-0 at halftime.
After the Jasaityte red card, the Duck defense tightened.
Goalkeeper Maddy Goldberg made diving saves in the 65th and 69th minutes. On the night, Goldberg had eight saves, while the Ducks (4-5, 0-2) were also credited with a team save.
Rutgers scored in the 84th minute for the final score.
Notable: The Ducks were shutout for the first time this season. … Goldberg now has 141 career saves and is nine back of eighth place (150, Cody Miles, 2008-10) on the UO career list. … This was the first meeting between Oregon and Rutgers. … The game was a homecoming of sorts for Brooklyn natives Bryan and Sydney Cradle.
Up Next: Oregon finishes the East Coast swing with a match at Maryland on Sunday (10 a.m. PT).
