• Six players currently on the Ducks' roster are working on their Master's degrees.
• Oregon welcomed 16 newcomers to the team for the fall - 8 freshmen, a sophomore, 3 seniors and 4 fifth years - 13 of whom have seen action.
LAST WEEK: PK HELPS NO. 22 UCLA ESCAPE
Oregon kept No. 22 UCLA off the scoreboard for most of the game and took a 1-0 lead in the 77th minute, but the Bruins scored twice in the final 11 minutes and – with the help of a penalty kick – fought off a determined Duck squad, 2-1, Sept. 14 at Papé Field. Goalkeeper Maddy Goldberg made seven of her season-high 11 saves in the opening frame as the game stood 0-0 heading into intermission. UCLA was called offside in the 76th minute, and on the restart, the Ducks worked the ball along the right side before Lucy Green lifted a pass up the field beyond UCLA's defense to set Lauren Kenny up with a one-on-one versus UCLA keeper Ryan Campbell. Capmbell made a diving save on Kenny's attempt, but Taylor Bryan cleaned up the rebound for her third goal of the season, giving Oregon a 1-0 lead. The momentum turned back to UCLA when the Ducks were called for a foul on the far edge of their own penalty area. Sunshine Fontes converted the penalty kick to knot the game at 1-1 in the 80th minute. Three minutes later, Jordan Geis scored the game-winner for the Bruins.
GOLDBERG TIED FOR SEVENTH IN UO CAREER SHUTOUTS
Maddy Goldberg now has four career shutouts - three this season - and is tied for seventh on the UO career list with Domenique Lainez (2001-05).
GOLDBERG CLIMBS CAREER SAVES LIST
Maddy Goldberg made her 100th career save in the season opener against Seattle and currently ranks ninth in school history with 133.
BIG TEN PRESEASON HONORS
Haley McWhirter, Livvy Moore and Makoto Nezu were named to the Big Ten Preseason Watch List. Nezu was an NCAA champion with Santa Clara, while McWhirter made two NCAA Tournament trips with Mississippi State. Moore is one of four returning starters for the Ducks.
NEW FACES
Oregon welcomed a mix of young and veteran new players for 2024. Among the 16 newcomers are eight freshmen, a sophomore three seniors and four fifth-year players. Thirteen have seen the field in 2024.
"GRANDMA SEASONS"
Coined by Taylor Bryan in the aftermath of her game-winner against Seattle, Oregon has seven players in their "grandma season" (fifth year) of eligibility thanks to the NCAA's Covid policy. In addition to Bryan, others playing their fifth season in college include Sydney Cradle, Lucy Green, Sydney Hennessey, Haley McWhirter, Makoto Nezu and Jayd Sprague. All seven of those players have NCAA Tournament experience - Bryan at Virginia Tech, Cradle with Towson, Green at Mississippi, Hennessey with Tennessee, McWhirter at Mississippi State, Nezu an NCAA champion with Santa Clara and Sprague at Idaho. Because they played in the 2020 Covid season and subsequently redshirted, both Bryan and Hennessey actually have another year of eligibility remaining and could return for a sixth season.
