Ducks Drop Road Contest Against No. 23 Stanford
03/23/24 | Women's Lacrosse
STANFORD, Calif. — Oregon lacrosse suffered an 18-8 defeat at the hands of No. 23 Stanford on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Ducks (6-3, 0-2 Pac-12) were outshot 52-21 by the Cardinal (5-3, 2-0 Pac-12) and put 14 shots on goal compared to Stanford's 40. Goalkeeper Thayer Hubbard did her best to limit the damage, logging 16 saves in her three quarters of play. Cassidy Eckert entered the game in the fourth quarter and saved six shots, combining with Hubbard to break the program record for saves in a game with 22.
"I'm very proud of the fight and grit the team showed today," head coach Jessica Drummond said. "A couple things to take away from this game that we can clean up, but also some awesome moments to keep with us moving forward. Massive shoutout to our goalies for stepping it up and making incredible saves that gave us a lot of opportunities today."
Morgan McCarthy and Katie Collins carried the load offensively as they each scored a pair of goals in the game, while Lauren Rismani notched two assists to extend her assist streak to 13 games dating back to last season. Oregon was an impressive 4-for-5 from free-position attempts in the game, including a 3-for-3 mark in the first half.
How It Happened: Stanford won the first draw control of the day and took the ball in to score less than a minute into the game. The Cardinal won the ensuing draw control, and after working around the Ducks' defense they scored again to go up 2-0 in the early stages. Collins got Oregon on the board with a free position goal, but Stanford scored in response to lead 4-1 after the first quarter.
The Oregon attack picked up in the second quarter as McCarthy forced her way to the net and scored to cut the lead, 4-2. The Cardinal responded with two goals of their own before McCarthy answered again, this time on a free position attempt. Two quick goals from Stanford put the home team on top 8-3, but Alex Matsuoka scored the first goal of her career to cut into the lead before halftime.
Out of the halftime break, Oregon put together an impressive sequence in which Hubbard saved a free-position attempt, then flung the ball down the field to Anna Simmons who took it to the other end and found Madysyn Sweeney for a quick goal less than a minute into the quarter. Four-straight Stanford goals put a stop to the momentum, however, and entering the fourth quarter the Ducks trailed 15-7.
In the final quarter of play Oregon scored two goals thanks to freshmen Gabby Santucci and Avery Young, but the Cardinal scored four themselves to hand the Ducks a second-straight loss to open Pac-12 play.
Notables: Two of Oregon's three losses this season have come against ranked opponents on the road – at No. 22 Rutgers and at No. 23 Stanford…Haley Cummins set a career high with seven draw controls.
Up Next: The Ducks return to Papé Field for a two-game homestand beginning with UC Davis on March 30 at 1 p.m. PT.
