Ducks Score 20 in Game One Win at Utah
03/15/24 | Softball
The Ducks (15-9, 3-1) scored four runs in the first inning, three in the second, four in the fourth and nine in the fifth to post their highest run total in nine years.
"We just kept passing the bat," said shortstop Paige Sinicki, who was one of three Ducks to drive in three runs Friday night. "It was fun. Good energy all around. It was good to see us get that big win today.
"We're doing a great job at celebrating the little things," Sinicki said. "I think we've all really bought into that and having all your teammates there to high-five you when you come back to the dugout is just one of the greatest feelings.
It was the most runs for Oregon since setting the school record in a 23-12 win over Oregon State on March 15, 2015. KK Humphreys tied the individual school record by scoring four runs against the Utes.
How it Happened: Oregon sent nine runners to the plate in the first inning and eight in the second.
The Ducks jumped ahead early by scoring four runs with two outs in the top of the first.
Kai Luschar led off with a double to extend her hitting streak to five games. Two outs later, she stole third before Humphreys walked. Humphreys then stole second to get into scoring position.
Alyssa Daniell beat out an infield single to score Luschar and Humphreys snuck home after Utah dropped the ball at first for the Ducks' second run of the game.
Vallery Wong then singled and Katie Flannery was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sinicki came through with a clutch two-run single to left and the Ducks led, 4-0, after a half inning of play.
"I think I had two strikes on me and just tried to figure out how I could get the ball in play – score the runs and I think a lot of us did a great job doing that today, clutching up when we needed to and moving the runners along," said Sinicki.
After Utah (14-10, 0-4) got a run back in the bottom of the first, Oregon struck for three more runs in the second.
Luschar led off with a single and stole second. Emma Kauf lifted a single down the left field line that moved Luschar to third. After Kauf moved into scoring position with a stolen base, Humphreys singled through the middle to score both runners.
After a pitching change, Humphreys stole second and came home on Daniell's double to right center, giving the Ducks a 7-1 lead.
The Utes scored a run in the bottom of the third before Oregon put the game out of reach in the fourth inning.
Humphreys walked followed by a Daniell single. Wong move Humphreys to third on a fly out. Flannery then reached on a bunt single that scored Humphreys.
With runners on second and third, Sinicki singled to left to drive in Daniell. Sinicki later scored on an error at first base. Carlson capped the rally with a single over second base that scored Delgado from second and gave the Ducks an 11-2 lead.
The Ducks sent 14 runners to the plate in the fifth inning and took advantage of some Utah errors to score nine runs.
Wong doubled to left center to plate Daniell, who reached on an error, to make it a 10-run lead.
Flannery then changed places with Wong on her first career double. Sinicki was hit by a pitch and Delgado walked to load the bases.
Pinch-hitter Remmington Hewitt reached base on a fielders' choice that brought Flannery home for a 14-2 advantage.
Another Utah error allowed two more Ducks to come home, making it 16-2.
Kauf walked to reload the bases for pinch-hitter Braiesey Rosa. The freshman from Hawaii making her first plate appearance drew a walk that forced in a run.
An RBI groundout by Daniell brought in the Ducks' 18th run.
Wong wrapped up the scoring for Oregon with a two-RBI single up the middle that plated the Ducks' 19th and 20th runs of the game.
Morgan Scott allowed two runs on three hits and struck out three in four innings to improve to 6-4 on the season.
Daniell, Wong and Flannery all had three-hit games, while Luschar and Sinicki had two hits. Daniell, Wong and Sinicki all had three RBI, while Carlson, Humphreys and Flannery drove in two runs.
Defense Shines Again
This was Oregon's 23rd consecutive game committing one or fewer errors.
"Our defense has been on lockdown," said Sinicki, who started a game-ending 6-4-3 double play. "We're doing a great job of making all the routine plays and even the hard ones so I think we're doing a great job on defense."
Quotable
Shortstop Paige Sinicki
"I think game one is the most important game for us. If you can get game one, it's a lot easier to get games two and three."
Noteworthy: Oregon's 17 hits were two shy of the school record, while the Ducks' 17 RBI were three short of the record … Luschar stole two bases to raise her Pac-12 leading total to 18 … Daniell tied her career highs in hits (3), runs (3) and RBI (3) … Luschar matched her career high with three runs … Sinicki's three RBIs tied a career high … Wong's three hits tied a career best.
On Deck: Game two between Oregon and Utah will be Saturday at 11 a.m. Pacific (Pac-12 Live Stream).
