Ducks Drop Game Two to Utah
03/16/24 | Softball
SALT LAKE CITY – Oregon scored seven times in the first three innings but it wasn't enough as Utah countered with seven runs of its own in the fourth and fifth innings and went on to defeat the Ducks 10-7 Saturday at Dumke Stadium.
A night after scoring 20 runs, No. 24 Oregon (15-10, 3-2) got off to a quick start by scoring a run in the first inning, five in the second and another in the third and led 7-3 after three innings. Utah (15-10, 1-4) tied it with four runs in the fourth inning and then took the lead with three runs in the fifth.
How it Happened: The first three innings went Oregon's way. In the circle, Stevie Hansen allowed three runs on five hits in three innings as the offense built an early lead.
Two batters into the first inning, Ariel Carlson put the Ducks on the board with her team-leading seventh home run of the season. She drove a 1-0 pitch well beyond the wall in left center field.
The Utes took advantage of three soft hits – a theme of the day – that dropped in to score twice in the bottom of the first, putting Utah ahead, 2-1. But Oregon responded in the top of the second.
Vallery Wong led off with a double and went to third on Emma Kauf's single. Wong was thrown out at the plate on Katie Flannery's grounder to third. Wong stayed in a rundown long enough for Kauf to advance to third while Flannery skated into second.
Paige Sinicki then dropped down a perfect squeeze bunt that scored Kauf to tie the game at 2-2.
Hanna Delgado gave the Ducks the lead with a line drive that glanced off the shortstop's glove, bringing in Flannery to put Oregon up, 3-2.
Kai Luschar then singled through the middle to load the bases before Sinicki scored on a wild pitch as the other two runners both moved up.
Carlson walked before Daniell delivered the big blow of the inning, a two-run double to the wall in right field that made it 6-2 Ducks.
Small ball helped Oregon score its seventh run of the game.
Wong led off the third inning with her second double of the game. She went to third on Kauf's grounder to the right side before Flannery sacrificed her home with a squeeze bunt down the first base line.
The Utes got one back in the bottom of the inning on a two-out triple to make it 7-3. They then strung together three hits with a walk and a passed ball to send four runners across the plate in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game at 7-7.
Utah added three more runs – two unearned – to take the lead for good in the fifth inning. The Utes scored 10 runs despite only getting three extra base hits, two of which dropped in front of Oregon's outfielders.
Noteworthy: Daniell, Wong and Kauf all had two hits … Wong's two doubles were a career best as she moved into the team lead with seven doubles on the season … Daniell's two RBI gave her 20 on the season, joining Wong (20) and Carlson (28) with 20-plus RBI.
On Deck: The Oregon-Utah series concludes Sunday at 10 a.m. Pacific (Pac-12 Live Stream).
