
Upset Bid Falls Short in Waco

WACO, Texas – The No. 2 Oregon acrobatics and tumbling team had No. 1 Baylor on the ropes after four events, but the Bears came back to spoil the upset bid and defeat the Ducks 278.935-271.585 on Sunday afternoon at the Ferrell Center.
Oregon (1-1) used three solid events in the Pyramid heat to take a 96.00-95.60 lead over Baylor (3-0) and held that lead through a tightly-contested toss event in which the home team won 28.85-28.55. In the tumbling event, the Bears needed a 9.95 in the six element pass and a 9.90 in the open pass to pull back ahead of the Ducks. Looking to make a comeback effort in the team event for the second-straight meet, Oregon put together a season-high score of 90.16 but fell short to Baylor's 96.66, cutting the upset bid short.
How It Happened: Oregon began the meet with mixed results in the compulsory event as a solid 9.90 in the pyramid heat and 9.85 in the toss heat were mitigated by an 8.70 in the tumbling heat, giving the Ducks a total score of 37.85 which trailed Baylor's 38.40.
The Bears continued to apply pressure in the acro event, scoring a 9.95 in the seven element heat to increase their overall lead 67.85-66.55. It was in the following pyramid event in which the Ducks began their comeback as junior top Bethany Glick soared above bases Ava Gowdy, Niya Hewitt and Bella Swarthout in the inversion heat to impress the judges with a 9.90. The score lifted Oregon above Baylor as the Ducks held a 96.00-95.60 overall advantage entering halftime.
Baylor was able to gain some ground back in the toss event, edging Oregon 28.85-28.55 despite a solid 9.75 from UO in the open heat. The score was enough give the Ducks a narrow 124.55-124.45 advantage overall with just two events remaining.
Oregon got a great performance from Rachel Furlong in the six element tumbling pass as the junior earned a 9.825, while 9.75s in the both the aerial and open passes helped the Ducks to a season-high 57.125 in the event. Baylor went on to win the event with a score of 57.825, regaining the lead as the final team event approached. Despite a near five-point improvement on its team event score from the previous meet, Oregon was outscored 96.66-90.16 and dealt its first loss of the season.
