Oregon beat TCU in four sets Friday evening at Matthew Knight Arena.
EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon volleyball team successfully defended its home floor Friday, taking down TCU in four sets at Matthew Knight Arena to advance to the NCAA regional semifinals. The Ducks have now advanced to the Sweet 16 for a third-consecutive season, and for the fifth time under head coach Matt Ulmer.
Oregon dropped the opening set but responded with a 19-25, 25-21, 25-11, 25-15 victory. Junior Mimi Colyer put down a match-high 19 kills while Cristin Cline and Michelle Ohwobete each tallied a double-double against the visiting Horned Frogs.
With the victory, the Ducks are on to their 10th regional semifinal appearance in program history.
Oregon (24-7) was strong behind the service line with 12 aces, a program high in an NCAA Tournament match. All six servers in the Ducks' rotation had at least one ace Friday, led by Ohwobete who posted a match-high three service winners.
After hitting just .129 in the first set, the Ducks posted a .314 efficiency over the final three frames while holding TCU to a .156 mark for the match, nearly 100 points below its .255 season average.
How It Happened: With the score tied at 5-all in the first set, TCU (22-8) rattled off six of the next seven points to take full control of the opener. The hosts got to within three—TCU up 19-16—after a Cline ace but never any closer the remainder of the set. Back-to-back UO attack errors gave the Horned Frogs the early 1-0 match lead.
The pivotal second set featured 10 ties and five lead changes. Late in the frame, Oregon led 21-18 after a kill by Ohwobete, but TCU responded with a three-point surge to tie the score. Colyer ended the next rally with a kill and the Ducks never looked back. Ohwobete had a kill to bring Oregon to set point at 24-21 and then teamed with Colby Neal for a block to pull the Ducks even on the match scoreboard.
An early start to the third, sparked by an 8-0 run with senior co-captain Daley McClellan at the line, put the Ducks ahead 13-4. The push featured an ace by McClellan for 8-4 and consecutive blocks featuring Ofoegbu. Oregon had five of its 12 aces in the third frame including one by Colyer for a 15-5 advantage. Kills by Colyer and Ofoegbu gave the Ducks set point and an ensuring TCU attack error clinched the 2-1 lead.
Oregon took the momentum into the start of the fourth, jumping out to a 9-3 lead on a second-touch kill for Cline. Out of a TCU timeout, the visitors went on a 4-0 run to get put to within two but the Ducks put away the next four points to re-establish a six-point lead at 13-7. The lead ballooned to nine—20-11—on a missed connection by the Horned Frogs middle attack.
Another 1-2 punch by Ofoegbu and Colyer pushed the Ducks to set and match point at 24-15. The team sealed the win when an attack by TCU's Melanie Parra landed long and sent the Ducks into celebration.
Parra and Becca Kelley led TCU with 18 and 11 kills, respectively.
Up Next: The Ducks await the winner of Saturday's second-round match between Oklahoma and overall No. 1 seed Pittsburgh.
