Ducks Fall in Five for First Loss

Oregon (5-1) is back in action Friday against weekend host Long Beach State.
LONG BEACH, Calif. — The Oregon volleyball team suffered its first loss Thursday night, falling in five sets to San Diego State at the Walter Pyramid in Walter Pyramid. Junior Valentina Vaulet recorded her first double-double of the season with 16 kills and 10 digs. With the setback, the Ducks are now 5-1.
Sophia Meyers and Iva Sucurovic with 14 and 10 kills, respectively, both season highs. Sucurovic also continued her strong defensive play at the net with eight total blocks.
How It Happened: After dropping the opening set for the first time this season, the Ducks erased a late deficit in the second to pull even on the match scoreboard. San Diego State (3-3) led 23-21 before back-to-back-to-back kills from Vaulet, Sucurovic and Meyers, respectively, flipped the advantage in the UO's favor.
After teaming up with Sucurovic for a block and a 25-24 lead, Meyers went back to the service line and delivered an ace to complete the late-set rally.
Oregon raced out to an 8-3 advantage in the third, forcing SDSU to use an early timeout on the heels of a 4-0 run that featured two kills and a block for Sucurovic. The Ducks stretched their led to 19-10 on the fourth kill of the night for Maria Tabacuks. San Diego State, however, began to chip away and eventually tied the set at 23-all.
In a similar final pattern to the end of the second, the Ducks turned to Meyers on their second set point and the veteran answered with a kill for the 2-1 match lead.
With the score tied 23-23 in the fourth set, San Diego State rattled off consecutive points to force a fifth frame. The Ducks were up 20-18 before SDSU went on a five-point run to go ahead, on its way to taking the set with a kill by Madison Corf.
Corf was one of three San Diego State players with double-digit kills. Amber Keen led SDSU with 14 kills followed by Corf with 11 and Taylor Underwood with 10 kills.
The teams traded points early in the fifth, lastly at 7-all but an Oregon service error handed SDSU an 8-7 lead at the side switch. San Diego State went up 11-8 after an service ace to force an Oregon timeout. In the final stretch, the Ducks were able to get to within two points including a kill by Vaulet to save match point and cut the SDSU lead to 14-12. However, Corf tallied one last kill to end the ensuing rally and the match.
Notable: The Ducks committed a season-high 28 service errors … held SDSU to a .135 hitting percentage in sets two through five; San Diego State hit .448 in the first set … Vaulet now has multiple aces in five of six matches this season.
