Ducks Fall in Pac-12 Opener
09/22/23 | Women's Soccer
TUCSON, Ariz. – Oregon opened Pac-12 play with a 3-0 loss at Arizona Friday at Mulcahy Soccer Stadium.
Â
The Wildcats (4-2-3, 1-0-0) scored once in the first half and twice after halftime.
Â
"We are disappointed as a team in how we conceded the first goal," said coach Graeme Abel. "We pride ourselves on how we defend the phases on set pieces.
Â
"But we responded well and felt getting the next goal would allow us to go on win the game."
Â
How It Happened: Arizona scored the game's first goal in the 14th minute and led 1-0 at halftime. The Wildcats added a second goal just 27 seconds into the second half and scored a third goal in the 61st minute.
Â
Cameron Bourne led the Ducks (0-7-2, 0-1-0) with a season-high three shots, while Tucson native Trinity Morales attempted two.
Â
Notable: The Ducks started at least five freshmen for the sixth time this season. … Bourne retook the team lead in shots with 13. … Defender Anna Phillips made her 45th consecutive start. … With six saves on Friday, Goldberg is now one save behind Lindsay Parlee (63/2010-11) for 10th in UO career saves. Goldberg now has 62 career saves.
Â
Quotable:
UO coach Graeme Abel on the Wildcats' goal at the start for the second half
"Unfortunately conceding a goal so early in the second half was a killer for us. Credit to Arizona as they capitalized on those opportunities."
Â
Up Next: Oregon returns home to host No. 20 Colorado (Thursday, 7 p.m.) and Utah (Oct. 1, 1 p.m.).
