Ducks Lose to Cal on Senior Day
04/20/19 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – Despite a ranked win atop the doubles lineup Saturday afternoon, the University of Oregon men's tennis team suffered a 4-0 setback to No. 35 Cal at the Student Tennis Center. During a break between singles and doubles play, the team's three seniors—Armando Soemarno, Ethan Young-Smith and Thomas Laurent—were recognized in an on-court ceremony.
Up Next: The 2019 Pac-12 Men's Championship (April 24-27) will be held at Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif. The bracket will be finalized following Sunday's league finale between Stanford and Washington. The Ducks finish the regular season with a 13-9 overall record.
At the No. 1 doubles spot, the team of Joshua Charlton and Ty Gentry posted a 6-2 win over the 32nd-ranked duo Jacob Brumm and Yuta Kikuchi from Cal. The win was their second over a ranked opponent this season. The doubles point came down to the No. 3 spot where Cal (12-11, 4-4 Pac-12) came away with a tightly contested 7-5 win to take the 1-0 match lead.
Sophomore Riki Oshima jumped out to an early lead on court three with a 6-3 win in the opening set but the visiting Bears was up a set on the five other courts. Fellow sophomore Joshua Charlton dropped the first set at the No. 4 spot but was ahead 4-1 in the second when Cal clinched the match.
The Bears ran through singles play with straight-set wins on courts two, five and six to secure the dual-match win.
