Ducks Fall to Utah in Pac-12 First Round
04/24/19 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – Separated by one spot in the national polls, the Oregon and Utah men's tennis teams battled for three-plus hours Wednesday in the Pac-12 Tournament. The Ducks grabbed the early lead but Utah responded in singles play for a 4-1 opening-round win.
Oregon (13-10) got on the scoreboard first with a hard-fought doubles point. Riki Oshima and Charles Roberts were the first Ducks off the court with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot. After Utah (17-10) evened things up with a win on court three, all eyes turned to the top spot.
With the score tied at 5-all, the newly ranked duo of Joshua Charlton and Ty Gentry got a late break and then held serve for a 7-5 triumph over David Micevski and Slava Shainyan. In Tuesday's ITA players poll, Charlton and Gentry—now 13-6 this year—check in as the No. 78 duo in the country.
The Ducks won the doubles point for just the second time in the past six matches.
Utah controlled the bottom half of the singles lineup with three straight-set wins to take a 3-1 lead in the match. Gentry and Oshima took the opening sets on courts two and three, respectively, to keep the Ducks hopes up but each eventually was pushed to a third set. On court one, Emmanuel Coste split the first two sets with No. 47 Dan Little.
The remaining three matches were all in a third set with the furthest along being Gentry's match with Micevski, the No. 74 player in the country. Gentry fell behind an early break but got it back to tie the score at 4-all and went on to hold serve for a 5-4 lead. However, Micevski steadied to win the final three games of the match to secure the win for Utah.
Oregon must now wait until Monday's selection show for a possible at-large NCAA Tournament bid. The 2019 national bracket will be announced April 29 on NCAA.com at 3 p.m. (PT).
