Ducks Set The Bar In Tournament Opening Victory Over Gannon
04/26/18 | Acrobatics & Tumbling
ERIE, Pa. – The Oregon acrobatics and tumbling team opened the 2018 NCATA Championship Tournament with a statement win over hosts Gannon, 276.140-265.525, Thursday evening in front of 1,450 fans at the Hammermill Center.
"You could tell as soon as they did that compulsory acro, that they were really dialed in today," said head coach Keenyn Won. "And I was really excited to see them continue to execute throughout the meet."
How it Happened: The Ducks (5-3) came out fired up recording two perfect 10s during the first two events.
UO's first 10 of the night came in the compulsory toss heat, which helped propel the Ducks to a 38.625-36.80 victory in the opening event.
The momentum continued to roll as seniors Alexis Cross and Taylor Galvin along with junior Tia Thomas opened the acro event with a 10 in the five element heat, marking a season-high score. UO left only 0.375 points on the mat during the acro event, marking the first of three straight events in which the Ducks left less than one point on the floor.
Much like they have all season, the Ducks dominated the pyramid event scoring above a 9.8 in all three heats. Oregon recorded a huge 29.55 to win the event by nearly two points over the Golden Knights and take a 97.80-92.18 lead into intermission.
Out of the break, the Ducks continued to extend their lead in the toss event with UO's 9.85 in the open toss heat capping off a 29.05-27.775 event victory.
After a solid start in the tumbling event, the Ducks raised the bar even higher in the final three heats.
Junior Hannah Blair kicked things off with a season-high score of 9.875 in the aerial tumbling pass. Senior Reagan Trussell followed suit, tying her season-high with a 9.85 in the six-element pass before Galvin closed out the event with a 9.90 in her open tumbling pass.
UO outscored Gannon by over two points in the tumbling event, 56.70-54.225, to take a nearly 10 point lead into the final event of the night.
Despite a few bumps along the way, the Ducks won the team event, 92.59-91.35, to sweep all six events and move into the semifinals.

On how the team performed…
"I think the team did absolutely amazing today. It's something we've been focusing on for the past two weeks, just executing from start to finish. The team event, obviously we had that bobble, so that is something that we are really going to think about cleaning up going into tomorrow's meet."
On facing Baylor in the semifinals…
"We are going to face it competing like it's our last chance, and refusing to lose. That's kind of a quote we've been talking about the past couple of weeks, just dialing in and refusing to lose. We've put in too much work, too much blood, sweat and tears, so cliché, but this team truly has been through so much and we came so close during that home meet against Baylor and couldn't execute in that team event and that's what lost it for us. I think tonight really built that confidence for us going into tomorrow. It is a big rivalry, and some people are bummed we had to see Baylor in the semifinals, but at the end of the day if we want to achieve our goals and take home that trophy we are going to have to beat them either way."
Senior Reagan Trussell
On tonight's performance…
"I think that we did really well today, especially our tumbling. We have some room to improve in the team event, and I think that it is kind of good that we didn't hit everything today. We still have another day to show exactly how good we are. Today just gives us a little more fire to do our best tomorrow."
Up Next: The Ducks will take on No. 1 Baylor in Friday's semifinals meet set for 4 p.m. PT.
