Duck Rally Falls Short At USC
03/16/18 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women's tennis team could not overcome in early deficit Friday morning, falling to USC 4-3 at the Marks Tennis Stadium.
How it Happened: The Trojans came out firing on all cylinders in doubles play, nearly blanking the Ducks (10-5, 1-2) on all three courts.
USC took the early lead following 6-0 and 6-1 victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, respectively, forcing the Ducks to play from behind heading into singles play.
The Trojans extended their lead as No. 37 Gabby Douglas downed Alyssa Tobita 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot.
Oregon's freshmen pulled the Ducks back into the match as Julia Lilien defeated USC's Angela Kulikova 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot. Paiton Wagner tied the match shortly afterwards after powering through Constance Branstine in the opening set and closing it out in a tiebreaker set, 6-1, 7-6(2), to knot it at 2-2 overall.
USC managed to get back in front as the Trojan's Becca Weissmann downed Julia Eshet at the No. 3 spot, 6-1, 6-4.
With Daniela Nasser leading at the No. 5 position and Shweta Sangwan looking to rally after dropping her opening set in the tiebreaker, the Ducks looked to stay alive and even the match at 3-3.
The Trojans were able to clinch the match, though, before Oregon could knot it up as Rianna Valdes defeated Shweta Sangwan, 7-6(5), 6-3, at the No. 2 spot.
Daniela Nasser was able to win her matchup following the clinch, after being pushed to the limit by Madison Westby, 7-6(3), 7-5.
Notable: Tobita squared off against her eighth ranked opponent in the last 10 matches … With her win today, Wagner strung together her first back-to-back wins since the first two matches of the spring season.
Up Next: The Ducks close out their California road trip with a top 20 matchup against No. 15 UCLA Sunday at 12 p.m.
