Ducks Fall At No. 15 UCLA
03/18/18 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 20 Oregon women's tennis team fell to No. 15 UCLA in a top 20 showdown at the UCLA Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.
How it Happened: Looking for only their second win in program history over UCLA, the Ducks (10-6, 1-3) were forced to battle from behind early in doubles play.
As Shweta Sangwan and Julia Eshet traded points with the No. 22 duo of Terri Fleming and Jada Hart at the No. 1 spot, the Ducks' remaining two pairs fell into a hole early.
Down 3-1 and 4-1, respectively, the pairs of Alyssa Tobita and Rifanty Kahfiani along with Nia Rose and Paiton Wagner fought back to pull their matches within one game, 4-3. That would be as close as either pair would get though as the Bruins clinched the doubles point with 6-3 and 6-4 wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively.
With five of their six players ranked in the ITA top 125, the Ducks had a tough test on their hands attempting to rally in singles play down 1-0.
Playing in her fourth straight ranked matchup, and ninth of the last 11, Tobita could not pull off the upset over No. 8 Ena Shibahara. The top-ranked Bruin downed Tobita, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot to extend UCLA's lead to 2-0.
The Ducks found their backs against a wall following the Bruins' win at the No. 6 spot, putting UCLA one point away from clinching the victory up 3-0.
Trailing on three of the four remaining courts, the Ducks refused to go down without a fight. With Eshet and Julia Lilien fighting to get the Ducks on the board in third sets, Daniela Nasser and Sangwan attempted to send theirs into a third as well.
After dropping their opening sets, both Nasser and Sangwan managed to tie their second sets at 4-4.
No. 41 Hart dashed any hopes of an Oregon comeback rallying to take the final two games over Sangwan at the No. 2 spot, winning 6-2, 6-4 to clinch the win for UCLA.
Quotable: Head coach Alison Silverio
On improving from the weekend...
"The preparation starts in practice and we all have to do better with taking care of the details."
Up Next: The Ducks will continue conference play at home, looking to snap their three-match losing skid hosting Arizona and Arizona State this coming Friday and Sunday, respectively.
