Ducks Sweep Wildcats 4-0
03/23/18 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women's tennis team got back in the win column, snapping a three-match losing streak, with a commanding 4-0 win over Arizona Friday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center.
How it Happened: The Ducks (11-6, 2-3) dominated the visiting Wildcats in doubles play with Alyssa Tobita and Rifanty Kahfiani posting the bagel against UA's Paris Corley and Camila Wesbrooks, 6-0.
Shweta Sangwan and Julia Eshet were not far behind at the No. 1 position, defeating their Wildcat opponents, 6-1, to clinch the doubles point for UO. Despite abandoning their match at the No. 3 spot, Nia Rose and Paiton Wagner were in the midst of an epic comeback, rallying from down 4-1, to tie the match at 4-4 before the point was secured.
In singles play, Kahfiani kept her momentum going playing in only her fifth singles match this spring. The Indonesian international made quick work of UA's Sophia Thomas, 6-0, 6-1, to extend the Ducks lead to 2-0.
Tobita followed suit shortly after her doubles partner winning only her second match this season at the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 6-3.
With Julia Lilien and Daniela Nasser each two games away from winning their matches at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, respectively, it became a race to see who would clinch the match.
Nasser would prove to be the decider, downing Marie Van Aelst 6-1, 6-3 to secure the 4-0 victory.
Even though their matches were abandoned, Sangwan and Eshet were in the midst of some gritty comebacks at the No. 1 and No. 3 spot, respectively.
Down 3-0 in her opening set, Sangwan rallied to win her opening set 7-5 against Mary Lewis, with the two tied 1-1 in their second set. Meanwhile, Eshet fought to send her match into a third set, after falling in her first set, when the match victory was clinched.
Who Stood Out: Kahfiani nearly finished the day with a complete sweep, dropping only one game throughout her three sets played … Tobita's win at the No. 2 spot marked only her second match this season at that position, the first coming in UO's second match of the year against San Diego.
Up Next: The Ducks close out the weekend hosting No. 35 Arizona State Sunday at 11 a.m.
