Ducks Shutout Sun Devils In Historic Victory
03/25/18 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women's tennis team closed out the weekend with their second straight shutout victory, defeating a depleted Arizona State squad, 4-0, Sunday morning at the Student Tennis Center.
The victory marks Oregon's first win against the Sun Devils since the 2004 season.
How it Happened: The Ducks (12-6, 3-3) opened the day's match with an advantage in doubles play. Plagued by the injury bug, the Sun Devils were forced to forfeit the match at the No. 3 spot.
Only needing one victory to clinch the doubles point, Alyssa Tobita and Rifanty Kahfiani jumped out to a 3-1 lead over ASU's No. 35 pairing of Tereza Kolarova and Savannah Slaysman. The Duck duo closed out their match, 6-3, to secure the opening point for UO.
Heading into singles play, the Ducks were gifted another point due to ASU's diminished roster. With no Sun Devil able to play at the No. 6 position, Oregon took a 2-0 lead before the first serve in singles play.
Looking like it would be a breeze to the match clinch, the Ducks found themselves locked in some tight battles as the Sun Devils attempted to step up and win it in singles.
Both squads traded games throughout their opening sets with the Ducks narrowly taking four of the five opening sets.
Freshman Paiton Wagner extended the Ducks lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kolarova at the No. 6 spot.
With Julia Lilien, Daniela Nasser and Tobita all fighting off their ASU opponents for a trio of hotly contested first set victories, the match came down to a three Duck race to see who would secure the victory.
All three Ducks were one game away from winning their respective matches in straight sets, but Tobita would edge out her teammates recording a 7-6(4), 6-2 win over Ilze Hattingh to clinch the match sweep.
Notable: Wagner's win marked only her second career victory at the No. 5 position … After winning both of her matches this weekend, Tobita now holds sole possession of the No. 3 spot on UO's all-time singles wins list with a career record of 74-47 … The win is Oregon's third victory over a ranked opponent this season.
Quotable: Head coach Alison Silverio
On the team's performance this weekend…
"Overall we've been talking the past two weeks about intensity and coming out and showing up every day, whether it's in practice or our matches or workouts. It was great to see us this weekend, come out on Friday and battle, have that intensity, and then be able to solidify that again today against Arizona State. Both great teams, and to go 2-0 on a conference weekend is always a positive."
On the team battling in close matches…
"That's what we've been discussing these last few weeks and we actually talked right before we came out for this match, never give up and no quit ... For our girls to be in situations where they are down in the score or down in the first set, we never stop coming after it. We never give up, we never quit and not only does that help us today, but that helps us in the long run and in our future matches. If that's habit, that we're fighting and we're competing and battling no matter what, then we are in a very good place."
Senior Alyssa Tobita
On having three Ducks all one game away from clinching the win…
"I think it's good that we are all racing to win. That just shows our team is right there, we're coming after it. It sucks for my teammates, but as a team that's a great thing to have."
On the program's rise since joining the team…
"It's kind of cool. I came into the program with Coach Alison [Silverio]. Before that we were bottom of the Pac-12, didn't know what to expect, and now to be here and play at this high level, it's kind of unreal."
Up Next: UO will enjoy some rest over spring break before returning to the courts to take on Cal Friday, Apr. 6, at 1:30 p.m. in Berkeley, Calif.
