Golden Bears Top Ducks In Close Matchup
04/07/18 | Women's Tennis
BERKELEY, Calif. – The Oregon women's tennis team and the California Golden Bears came to play Saturday after having their match postponed due to rain on Friday. The two squads looked evenly matched forcing four tiebreakers and two third sets, but in the end California managed to get the best of the Ducks, defeating UO 4-2 at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
How it Happened: The tone was set early in the match as the Ducks (12-7, 3-4) and the Golden Bears traded wins in doubles play. The freshmen duo of Paiton Wagner and Julia Lilien got UO rolling with a win at the No. 3 spot over Hana Mraz and Maria Smith, 6-3.
After Cal picked up a 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot, the doubles point came down to Alyssa Tobita and Rifanty Kahfiani. The Duck duo went on to secure the point with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot.
The back-and-forth play continued in singles as both teams traded games throughout the opening sets, with three going into tiebreakers.
After winning her opening set tiebreaker at the No. 1 spot, Tobita gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead with a 7-6(4), 6-3 win over No. 41 Julia Rosenqvist.
The Golden Bears answered right back with two straight victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to tie the match 2-2. Cal took the lead following Vivian Glozman's three set win over Wagner at the No. 5 spot, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Down 3-2, Daniela Nasser and Kahfiani fought to extend their matches at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions into a third set after dropping their opening set.
Kahfiani managed to win her second set tiebreaker to force a third, but Nasser could not do the same, falling to Smith, 6-4, 6-4, to clinch the match victory for Cal.
Notable: Tobita's win over Rosenqvist marks her fourth victory over a ranked opponent this spring ... Despite falling in her singles match, Julia Lilien played her first career match at the No. 2 spot against Cal.
Up Next: The Ducks close out their trip through California against No. 23 Stanford Sunday at 11 a.m. PT.
