STANFORD, Ore – The Oregon women's tennis team ran into stiff competition Sunday afternoon, falling to Pac-12 leaders No. 23 Stanford, 6-1, to close out its weekend road trip in California.
How it Happened: With four singles players and one doubles team ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's top 100, the Ducks (12-8, 3-5) faced a big challenge at Stanford.
Shweta Sangwan and Julia Eshet gave the No. 3 duo of Emily Arbuthnott and Michaela Gordon a run for their money in doubles play, tying the match 4-4.
The ranked showdown would be left unfinished though as Stanford recorded 6-2 and 6-3 wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively, to clinch the opening point.
The Cardinal relied on their ranked players to extend their lead in singles play as No. 74 Melissa Lord downed Julia Lilien at the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 6-1.
After a win at the No. 6 spot, Stanford clinched the match victory at the No 4 position with No. 38 Arbuthnott picking up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Julia Eshet.
Senior Alyssa Tobita prevented the match sweep, recording her second straight win over a ranked opponent, by defeating No. 16 Gordon at the No. 1 spot, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Tobita's win marks the first victory over a top 20 opponent for UO this season, while improving her to 5-9 on the year against ranked foes.
Up Next: The Ducks close out the regular season on their home courts hosting Colorado Friday, April 13, followed by Utah
