Late Goal Tilts the Civil War to OSU
11/02/17 | Women's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. — Oregon State scored a goal in the 83rd minute off a free kick to win Thursday's Civil War 1-0 at Lorenz Field.
OSU's Emma Jones drilled the 19-foot free kick into the back of the net for the only score of the game.
The Ducks outshot the Beavers (6-10-3, 3-7-1) 14-11 and attempted 14 corner kicks, one shy of the school record.
Who Stood Out: Defender Michelle Rockey led Oregon with four shots, while Marissa Everett and Jessica Yu each attempted three.
In goal, Halla Hinriksdottir made three saves.
What It Means: Despite the loss, Oregon matched its victory total from a year ago with eight.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"We started a little slow, but I thought the last part of the first half and the second half we played much better."
"It's sad to end the season this way. We have some work to do in the offseason, but we're looking forward to the future."
Notable: Rockey, playing in her final match as a Duck, matched her season high with four shots. … Mertz presented Pac-12 Networks announcer Tammy Blackburn with a pink Oregon jersey at halftime that was autographed by the team. Blackburn is currently fighting breast cancer. … Mia Costa wore No. 22 for the final six matches of the 2017 season to honor teammate Brianne Parsons. Parsons and her family lost their Santa Rosa home to the fires in Northern California last month.
Up Next: The Ducks conclude the 2017 season at 8-11 overall and 2-9 in the Pac-12.
