EUGENE, Ore. – Top-seeds Alyssa Tobita and Shweta Sangwan lead the Oregon women's tennis team to California this Thursday for the ITA Northwest Regional Championships.
Draw updates and a complete listing of singles and doubles champions per region will be posted on the ITA Regional Championships event page, located here.
Singles and doubles champions from each regional tournament gain automatic entry into the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships which will be held November 1-5 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif., and the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, Calif.
Action begins Thursday morning with the opening main draw doubles round of 64 beginning at 8:15 a.m. PT followed by the main draw singles round of 128.
Heading into the tournament senior Tobita will have a bye in the first round after earning the No. 2 overall seed in the singles bracket. She'll await the winner of UC Davis' Nikita Pradeep and Santa Clara's Katya Tabachnik in the round of 64 Thursday afternoon.
Junior Sangwan also enters the tournament as one of the No. 9 seeds squaring off against Carolina Chernyetsky of Sacramento State in the opening round.
Sangwan along with seniors Nia Rose and Tobita made it to the round of 32 in last year's regionals with Rose and Tobita earning berths in the sweet 16 before their tournament run came to an end.
Sophomore Julia Eshet will attempt to surpass her impressive run in last year's regionals. The Hollywood, Fla., native made it all the way to the quarterfinals in doubles play with then partner Marlou Kluiving. The duo had their run ended against the top-seeded pair from UC Berkeley.
Eshet, who is coming off a 6-0 weekend in both singles and doubles play at the Husky Invitational, also advanced to the round of 32 in last year's singles bracket.
This time around Eshet will team up with sophomore Rifanty Kahfiani in their first-ever pairing, opening the tournament against a duo from Cal Poly.
UO's other doubles pairs include junior Daniela Nasser and Rose along with the No. 3 seeded Sangwan and Tobita who will have a first round bye and play in the round of 32 Friday morning.
Sangwan and Tobita will be Oregon's most seasoned duo this weekend combining for a 29-9 career record when pairing together.
Looking Ahead: Following the ITA Northwest Regionals, the Ducks will participate in the Jack Kramer Invitational beginning Nov. 2.
