Oregon Sharp in Win Over Robert Morris
03/14/15 | Women's Lacrosse
EUGENE – Paced by the play of Olivia Pyne, the Oregon women's lacrosse team throttled Robert Morris, 16-4, on Friday night at Papé Field.
How It Happened: Oregon (5-1, 1-1 MPSF) got off to a nice start in the first 10 minutes of play, behind its seniors. Devon Frazer launched one past the Robert Morris keeper to put the Ducks on top 3-0 with 20:31 left in the first half. Emily Jamison of RMU (4-2) immediately answered after Frazers' goal on a pass from Kristin Yoviene 31 seconds later to make it 3-1.
UO tacked on another pair of goals midway through the first half, before Jamison knocked in another goal for the Colonials. Holly Johnson found a cutting Casey Brogan near the crease to give Oregon the 8-2 lead heading into the break.
Both teams played a bit aggressive in the first half as RMU and UO were both penalized with a pair of yellow cards. Although there weren't any yellow cards assessed in the second half, there was a slight uptick in fouls as both combined for 58 fouls in the game.
Cambi Cukar looked primed to surpass her single-game assists record (6) early in the second half when she found Johnson and Carly O'Connell in the opening minutes of the second half. The freshman however would finish with five, one short tying her single-game record, after finding O'Connell from behind the net.
After an RMU goal from Katie Breeze at the 26:34 mark, the UO defense flexed its muscles and forced seven turnovers. Those seven turnovers allowed the fast-paced Oregon offense to go on a 5-0 run behind Valdez (2), Pyne (2) and Rachel Steinberg (1) to hold the Colonials scoreless for 21:34 minutes during that stretch.
Jessica Karwacki, the nation's leader in draw controls with 14.80 per game, made it a 15-4 affair at the 1:48 mark and was held to just eight draw controls in the game. Maddie Terefenko netted her second-career goal with 44 seconds left on the clock when Rachael Walker found her flashing towards the crease to give the Ducks the 16-4 victory.
In The Cage: Janelle Parker had another stellar night in the cage for the Ducks, stopping five balls in 43:55 minutes of action while giving up just three goals. Jenna Morris came in to relieve Parker in the second half, logging 16:05 minutes of action, giving up one goal to go along with two terrific saves.
By The Numbers: With her four goals today, Pyne has now scored in six-straight games this year and 12 dating back to last season … The last time Pyne was held scoreless was against UC Davis at home on April 13 … Valdez is the only other player on the team to have scored in every game this season … With her five assists today, Cukar becomes the first Duck to reach double-digits in assists with 14 … Oregon held Robert Morris, the nation's leader in draw controls with 19.60 per game, to just 11 draw controls.
Up Next: Oregon will wrap up its five-game homestand at noon on Sunday, March 15, when the Ducks face off against Richmond at Papé Field.
