EUGENE – Olivia Pyne powered Oregon past the Richmond Spiders on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Papé Field with a career-high six goals as the Ducks went on to win 15-11.
How It Happened: It was a close affair in the first10 minutes of the game after Richmond went up 2-1 against Oregon after Emily Castle's goal at the 21:56 mark.
However, that was the last time the Spiders would lead the game as Oregon reeled off four-straight goals that was capped off by Carly O'Connell's zinger with 13:19 left to play in the first half. With the Ducks leading 5-2, UR's Emily Doyle found Bailey Zerr to cut the lead to 5-3.
UO would score twice more behind O'Connell and Courtney Valdez to push the Oregon lead to 7-3. However, Richmond was able to score on back-to-back free-position shots to cut the Ducks' lead to 7-5 heading into the break.
Richmond would once again start the half with a goal, this time from Kim Egizi 1:33 minutes in. Pyne answered the call for Oregon again and powered in her third and fourth goals of the game to give the Ducks a 9-6 lead.
Zerr found the back of the net once more for UR, but the Ducks responded quickly and ferociously, pounding in another four goals to extend their lead to 13-7.
The Spiders rallied in the final 11 minutes of play behind Anna Jeszeck's two goals, but the Ducks answered both times.
Pyne netted her sixth goal of the game on a heads up play after the UR keeper tried to make a play on the ball rolling down the backside of the net that went straight through her legs and into the possession of Pyne who would then roll to the net and score.
Newman scored for UR with 15 seconds left in the game, but it was too little too late as Oregon walked away with its third win in five days.
Janelle Parker played the entire game for UO, stopping five shots to tie her career-high. Valdez finished the game with three goals for a new season high while O'Connell tied her season-high with her third hat-trick of the season
By The Numbers: The win Sunday makes it four-straight wins for Oregon … Pyne extended her scoring streak to seven games this season and 13 dating back to last season … The Ducks were efficient and deadly from the field, scoring 15 of their 18 shots on goal (.833) … Oregon recorded more saves than its opponent for the first time this season (5-3) … Oregon trailed in the draw control category for the first this season in the win (17-11) … Richmond was 6-of-6 in free-position opportunities.
Quotable: “I think we just got our offense spread out so when they're doubling up top which allows us to see the open teammate on the backside. We've been working on that high to low feed a lot and I think it showed today. Our team is so selfless and everyone is really looking for that extra pass and I think that's really given defenses a hard time.” – UO senior midfielder Olivia Pyne.
Up Next: The Ducks now hit the road during their Spring Break for a four game set. UO will first head to Fresno, Calif., for a non-conference neutral match-up with Monmouth (3/21) before taking on Fresno State in a MPSF showdown on March 23. Oregon will then fly to New York for a showdown with LIU Brooklyn (3/26) followed by Stony Brook (3/28) to wrap up its road trip.
