Ducks Fall at Cal, 85-77

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The University of Oregon men's basketball dropped a 85-77 decision at California on Saturday afternoon at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif. The Ducks fell to 10-11 overall and 3-6 in Pac-10 Conference play. Cal improved to 12-9, 5-4 in league play.
Senior forward Joevan Catron recorded 22 points, eight rebounds and five assists to lead the Ducks offensively. Junior forward Tyrone Nared added career-highs with 14 points and 10 rebounds (five offensive boards) for his first career double-double as a Duck.
Junior guard Malcolm Armstead added a season-high 16 points and a team-high six assists off the bench for UO.
Marc Sanders-Frison and Allen Crabbe each scored 18 points to lead the Golden Bears.
Oregon returns to action next week with home games against Washington State (Feb. 3) and Washington (Feb. 5).
POSTGAME NOTES
- Oregon twice held a lead (2-0 at the 19:50 mark; 4-2 at the 18:47 mark).
- After being down by as many as 18 points, the Ducks cut the lead to one point 66-65 with 6:33 in the second half.
- Joevan Catron led the Ducks in scoring for the 12th time this season (15th time in his career). It was his sixth 20-point effort of the year (seventh of his career).
- Tyrone Nared, making his third straight start, reached double figures in scoring for the fourth time this season. His double-double was the fifth of the season for a UO player (Catron 2, Singler 2, Nared 1).
- Malcolm Armstead reached double figures in scoring for the second straight game (third time in the last five outings). It was the seventh time this season he has scored 10 or more points (22nd time in his career).
- Cal posted a 19-5 run in the first half (from the 16:21 to 11:51 mark) to take a 29-11 lead. The Ducks countered that with a 14-5 run to make the score 34-25 with 8:15 in the first half. Garrett Sim made two 3-pointers during that stretch.
- After opening the first four minutes of the game shooting 1-of-6 from the floor (16.7 percent) to fall behind 13-6, the Ducks went on to make six of their next 13 shots (46.2 percent) to pull within nine points at 34-25. UO finished the first half 11-of-28 on field goals (39.3 percent).
