EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon lacrosse team lost its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game of the season, 12-5, to California on a cold and windy Friday night at Pape' Field. The Ducks fall to 5-8, 1-1 MPSF with the loss while California improves to 4-8, 1-3 MPSF with the win.
Oregon led at halftime in a low scoring opening period, 3-2. The Ducks had goals from Alex Breiner, Bina Barrett and Maggie Kovacs before the break. But it was Cal that had all the momentum coming out of halftime, as the Golden Bears scored seven straight times to open the second half and took a 9-3 lead before the Ducks could get their first score of the second stanza. The Ducks would get another goal but Cal scored three more times before the final buzzer to put the game away 12-5.
It was a whistled-filled game, as seven yellow cards were issued and one green card - for delay of game. In all, 48 fouls were called with 34 going against California. The Ducks could not capitalize, however, as they went 2-of-6 on free position attempts. California went 2-of-3 from the eight-meter hashes.
Oregon was led by two goals from Kaitlyn Pasko, both in the second half, while Salliebeth Finnegan is now just one save away from 100 on the season as she stopped eight shots on Friday night.
California was paced by Vail Horn's four points on three goals and one assist. In the net Allie Shropshire has nine saves.
Oregon will be back in action shortly, as the Ducks battle Saint Mary's at noon on Sunday at Pape' Field.
