EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Oregon soccer team scored three first-half goals and held off a late surge by Loyola Marymount to post a 3-2 home win Friday evening at Pape' Field in Eugene. The Ducks, who are hosting the 2009 Oregon Nike Tournament, improved to 3-1-1 overall with the victory. LMU dropped to 4-2-0 overall.
“The first half and the finishing by our team in that half was awesome,” head coach Tara Erickson said. “The down side (of the match) was not being able to close out the game the way we would have liked to.”
The Ducks jumped out to the early lead in the seventh minute when a pair of freshmen connected for the first score. Forward Julie Armstrong, from Delta, B.C., played a long through-ball in behind the LMU defense and found a wide-open Kelsey Hones, who beat LMU goalkeeper Allyssa Clark to put the Ducks up 1-0.
Hones and Armstrong continued their offensive assault 10 minutes later. Hones, from Beaverton, Ore., sent a shot at Clark which ricocheted to Armstrong who scored on the immediate put-back.
Both were the first career goals for Armstrong and Hones at Oregon. “It was great to see other players step up and score some goals,” Erickson said. “I think that is a result of the time they have spent together over the summer. The chemistry they have developed is starting to show.
“For those guys to connect and have those opportunities together, means good things for our future,” Erickson added.
Junior forward Jen Stoltenberg scored the game-winning goal in the 37th minute, her fourth of the season. Senior midfielder Teresa Bowns found Stoltenberg up field, who beat Clark far post from 25 yards out.
“For Stolt to score that laser goal from distance, it was really great for her confidence,” Erickson said.
LMU scored its first goal of the match just two minutes later when Erin Rementer re-directed a Lacy Bartels crossing pass.
Rementer scored a second goal in the 77th minute, finishing off a long ball played in behind the Oregon defense by Jordan Nelson.
Both Oregon and Loyola Marymount had late goal scoring chances, but neither could find the back of the net.
The Ducks held a 13-9 shot advantage, while earning seven corner kick opportunities to LMU's four. Oregon was whistled for 10 fouls to Loyola Marymount's six.
Eight Oregon players recorded a shot in the contest, led by senior midfielder Teresa Bowns who tallied a match-high three shots. Freshman midfielder Scout Libke, Hones and Stoltenberg each had two shots in the match.
Duck goalkeeper Cody Miles had two saves and two goals allowed while playing the duration of the match.
LMU was led offensively by Rementer and Tiffany Harrison who each had two shots in the contest. Clark had two saves and three goals allowed in 90 minutes of work.
Oregon (3-1-1) returns to action on Sunday when they host Seattle University (4-3-0) in the finale of the 2009 Oregon Nike Tournament, with match-time slated for 1 p.m. (PT). Seattle U. is coming off a 1-0 defeat to Oregon State in the first match of the tourney played on Friday evening.
“I think that Seattle is a good team. Every result that I've seen for them this season has been close – they stay in games,” Erickson said. “They'll be a different style of opponent than LMU, but they will to come away with a win.”
