Oregon Soccer Closes Tournament With Win Over Seattle U.
09/14/09 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. -- Junior forward Jen Stoltenberg scored the game-winning goal in the 19th minute to lift the University of Oregon soccer team to a 1-0 home win over Seattle University on Sunday afternoon at Pape' Field in Eugene. The Ducks improved to 4-1-1 with the victory, which was their third consecutive of the season. The Redhawks dropped to 4-4-0 overall on the year.
“I loved our possession and I thought we went forward well,” head coach Tara Erickson said of UO's play in the win. “We definitely moved the ball around and solved any problems that they (Seattle U.) presented to us during the match.”
The only score of the contest came from the Ducks' leading scorer Stoltenberg, who tallied her fifth goal of the season. She took a pass in the attacking third from freshman forward Julie Armstrong, dribbled past the defender before firing a shot by Seattle U. goalkeeper Madison Goverde for the score. The assist was Armstrong's third of the year and second in the last two matches.
“Julie faced up really well with pressure and made a great pass through to Stolt,” Erickson said. “When Julie has control of the ball, she can move well, have great touches and have great vision.”
UO sophomore goalkeeper Cody Miles registered her eighth career shutout in the win (second of the season) as she played the full 90 minutes. Miles, from Salem, Ore., had three saves while facing six shots from Seattle U.
“Cody did a good job today. She was her typical calm, cool self in goal,” Erickson said. “She generated good play out of the back with her feet and distributed well.”
The four Oregon defenders, seniors Dani Oster and Danielle Sweeney, junior Mercedes Walters and freshman Nicole Bakke, also played the duration of the match.
“I think our back line held things down while also generating attacks by getting out wide. They helped us to possess the ball,” Erickson added.
Oregon out-shot Seattle U., 13-6, with five different Ducks recording shots in the contest. Senior midfielder Teresa Bowns tallied a match-high five, Stoltenberg added three, two of which were on goal. Armstrong and junior midfielder Bree Rowe each had two, with one on goal. Freshman forward Kelsey Hones also had a shot in the match.
Strong play in the midfield was key in the win, with junior midfielder Kirstie Kuhns playing the full 90 minutes while anchoring the center of the field.
“I think Kirstie Kuhns did a nice job in the midfield to win the 50-50 battles,” Erickson said. “All three of our midfielders ? Kuhns, Rowe and Bowns ? did a nice job of keeping the ball and keeping us in rhythm.”
UO generated eight corner kick opportunities while limiting the Redhawks to only a single corner. Seattle U. had 10 fouls in the contest to Oregon's seven.
Forward Jamie Coe, one of five players to take a shot for Seattle U., had a team-high three shots with a pair on goal. Goverde tallied four saves and one goal allowed in playing 90 minutes in goal for SU.
Oregon (4-1-1) returns to action next weekend at the Oregon State Classic played Sept. 18-20 in Corvallis, Ore. The Ducks will face neutral-site contests against Denver on Friday and Dartmouth on Sunday.
Tournament notes: Oregon State was declared the 2009 Oregon Nike Tournament champion going 2-0-0 over the weekend. OSU won a second tie-breaker (goals allowed: OSU 1, UO 2) over host team Oregon, who also went 2-0-0.
