Lacrosse Comeback Ends in OT at Cal
04/18/09 | Women's Lacrosse
BERKELEY, Calif. -- The University of Oregon women's lacrosse team fought back from a 10-4 second-half deficit before succombing to Cal, 13-12, in the third overtime period in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest Friday.
The Ducks (10-4, 3-2 MPSF) trailed 10-4 with under 20 minutes to play and outscored the Golden Bears (6-10, 4-2) 7-1 before the end of regulation, sending the contest into overtime tied 11-all.
Jana Drummond, who set the single-game school record with seven goals, gave UO its only lead at 12-11 with a goal in the second overtime. But Cal's Alyse Kennedy countered 28 seconds later to square the game.
In the third OT, the format switched to sudden victory, and Molly Everett's free position shot with 15 seconds to play gave the Bears the victory.
Cal would have wrapped up the win in 60 minutes had it not been for Oregon's four-goal run over the final 7:34. Drummond started the string, which also included goals by Ilsa van den Berg, Bina Barrett and Casey Rector's game-tying strike with 25 seconds to play.
Van den Berg was the only other UO player to score multiple goals, ending with two to become the Ducks' all-time leader in career points with 186, passing former player and current assistant coach Jen Derby (May).
Kennedy and Everett paced the Bears with three goals apiece.
Oregon outshout Cal by a wide margin, 36-24, forcing 16 saves from goalie Morgan Dyson. UO's Anna Poponyak was credited with five stops.
The Ducks finish the regular season at Saint Mary's on Sunday at noon. A victory over the Gaels would give Oregon a share of second-place in the conference.
