MORAGA, Calif. -- The Universtiy of Oregon women's lacrosse team sewed up a program-best second-place finish in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, defeating Saint Mary's, 17-10, in Sunday's regular season finale.
As a result, the Ducks (11-4, 4-2 MPSF) will face No. 7 seed Fresno State (0-13, 0-6) in the quarterfinals of the MPSF tournament on Thursday in Stanford, Calif.
Two days after freshman Jana Drummond set a single-game school record with seven goals in an overtime loss to Cal, it was two other UO rookies pacing the Ducks' attack as Catherine Davidson and Bina Barrett tallied five points apiece. Davidson netted a game-high four goals and Barrett added a game-high three assists.
All three of Oregon's goalies saw action with starter Anna Poponyak earning the victory. The senior captain allowed three first-half goals and recorded five saves.
The Ducks led 4-0 less than six minutes into the contest and the rout was on. Oregon eventually built a 15-6 lead before emptying the bench. SMC (3-12, 1-5) saw hat tricks from P.J. Hainley and Juliet Munroe in its eighth loss in as many games all-time against UO.
In previous years, the No. 2 seed received a bye and began tournament play in the semifinals, but due to the league's expansion to seven teams for 2009, only the top team - No. 1 Stanford - was granted a pass in the first round.
