Oregon Loses at Southern California, 1-0
10/25/09 | Women's Soccer
USC midfielder Alyssa Davila scored the match's only goal in the eighth minute in handing the University of Oregon soccer team a 1-0 defeat Sunday afternoon at McAlister Field in Los Angeles, Calif. The ninth-ranked Women of Troy improved to 12-5-0 overall and 4-2 in Pac-10 Conference play. The loss dropped the Ducks to 8-7-1 on the year and 0-5-0 in league action.
"It was another tough loss in a match where we had our chances," head coach Tara Erickson said.
Davila's score was unassisted, a shot from just outside the 18-yard box which beat UO senior goalkeeper Jessie Proulx to the top left of the goal. Proulx had five saves and one goal allowed in playing the full 90 minutes for the Ducks.
Six different Oregon players recorded a shot in the match, led by juniors Jen Stoltenberg and Kirstie Kuhns who each tallied three shots with one on goal. Senior Teresa Bowns, junior Bree Rowe and freshmen Julie Armstrong and Scout Libke each had one shot.
"We were just a hair away from scoring a couple of goals," Erickson said. "We had some really good looks - their keeper did a good job to keep the ball out of the back of the net."
USC had a slim advantage in shots, 11-10, which included a 6-3 shots on goal difference. The Women of Troy had nine corner kicks in the match, while limiting Oregon to just two. The Ducks were whistled for six fouls, the Trojans were called for five. USC was offside on three occasions, UO was offside once.
Seven Oregon field players went the full 90 minutes in the road loss. Bowns, Kuhns and Stoltenberg were joined by seniors Dani Oster and Danielle Sweeney, junior Mercedes Walters and sophomore Taylor Jones in playing the duration of the match.
"(Danielle) Sweeney and Mercedes (Walters) did a great job at the center back positions. Kirstie Kuhns played well, the midfield did a great job," Erickson added.
USC forward Megan Ohai had three shots, two on goal. Both of Davila's shots were on target. Forward Samantha Johnson came off the bench to also record two shots for USC.
Oregon (8-7-1, 0-5-0 Pac-10) returns to action next weekend with the final home matches of the 2009 season. The Ducks will host Washington Friday evening, before closing the weekend Sunday afternoon with a Senior Day contest against Washington State.
