The University of Oregon soccer team lost 5-1 to No. 4 UCLA Friday evening at Drake Field in Los Angeles, Calif. The loss was the Ducks' fourth straight, dropping their season mark to 8-6-1 overall and 0-4 in Pac-10 Conference play. The Bruins improved to 13-2-1 on the year and 4-1-0 in league action.
"We had some critical breakdowns defensively and UCLA did a very good job of capatilizing on those," head coach Tara Erickson said. "UCLA is a very good team, very dynamic."
Oregon's lone goal came in the 60th minute off the foot of junior forward Jen Stoltenberg. Junior midfielder Kirstie Kuhns passed to Stoltenberg who beat UCLA goalkeeper Chante' Sandiford with a shot from the top of the 18-yard box.
The Ducks were out-shot 15-3 in the contest. The Bruins held a 6-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities, while each team was whistled for seven fouls.
Stoltenberg, Kuhns and senior midfielder Teresa Bowns each registered a shot on goal in the match. Senior goalkeeper Jessie Proulx had four saves and five goals allowed in playing the duration of the contest.
UCLA forward Sydney Leroux scored the first goal of the match in the fourth minute, assisted by Elise Britt and Summer Williams. Forward Laura Cheney put the Bruins up 2-0 in the 18th minute, assisted by Williams. UCLA's third first-half goal came in the 21st minute, with another goal by Cheney, assisted by Britt and Zakiya Bywaters.
Bywaters gave UCLA a 4-0 lead in the 56th minute assisted by Cheney and Lauren Barnes. Leroux scored her second goal of the match in the 59th minute, a header off a crossing pass from Amelia Mathis.
