UO Soccer Falls in Road Test with BYU
10/02/09 | Women's Soccer
The University of Oregon soccer team had its six-match winning streak snapped Thursday night with a 1-0 road loss to BYU in Provo, Utah. The Ducks dropped to 7-2-1 overall with the loss, their first since the season-opening defeat to No. 4 Portland. The Cougars improved to 9-2-1 with the victory.
"It was a pretty evenly fought match on both sides," head coach Tara Erickson said. "BYU was very athletic and attacked us with a lot of energy. They were fairly direct and they were effective with that style."
BYU's Jessica Ringwood scored the game-winning goal in the 25th minute on an assist from Andrea Willis. After a foul in the middle third of the field, Willis sent a free ball into the 18-yard box in the direction of Ringwood and a group of Oregon defenders. The pass bounced off the back of Ringwood and redirected into the goal past Oregon sophomore goalkeeper Cody Miles.
BYU goalkeeper McKinzie Olson had three saves, two which came off the foot of UO senior midfielder Teresa Bowns and another from junior forward Rianna Mansfield.
Bowns finished with a team-high three total shots in 90 minutes of action. Junior forward Jen Stoltenberg had two shots, while senior defender Danielle Sweeney added one shot in the losing cause.
"We had chances," Erickson said of the offensive attack. "Our attack was dynamic but we just couldn't quite get one into the back of the net."
Miles went the distance in goal, allowing one goal while recording one save. Sweeney, fellow senior Dani Oster and junior Mercedes Walters all played the full 90 minutes on the Oregon back line. Junior Kirstie Kuhns and freshman Scout Libke also played the duration of the match.
BYU held a slight shot advantage, 8-7, while each team had five corner kicks in the match. The Cougars were whistled for eight fouls to the Ducks' four.
Oregon (7-2-1) will return to the pitch on Saturday morning with a road match against Weber State. Match-time for the Ducks-Wildcats contest is scheduled for 10 a.m. (PT). No live coverage is scheduled for that match.
