Late Goal By Kuhns Lifts UO Soccer to Road Win
10/03/09 | Women's Soccer
Junior midfielder Kirstie Kuhns scored the game-winning goal with under three minutes remaining in the second overtime to lead the University of Oregon soccer team to a 1-0 road win over Weber State Saturday morning in Ogden, Utah. The victory was the Ducks' seventh in their last eight games, improving their season mark to 8-2-1 overall. The Wildcats dropped to 4-6-0 on the season.
Kuhns, from Pleasanton, Calif., picked an opportune time to score her first goal of the season, breaking a scoreless draw in the 108th minute (of a possible 110). The play developed when senior defender Danielle Sweeney centered a pass to senior midfielder Teresa Bowns, who fired a shot at WSU goalkeeper Rebecca Ritchie which deflected off the keepers' hands. Kuhns capitalized on the deflection, heading the loose ball into the net for the win.
"Our team is excited to get a win on the road in a tough environment," head coach Tara Erickson said. "It was a battle. Both teams definitely played hard."
Sophomore goalkeeper Cody Miles had a season-best 10 saves while playing the duration of the match. Miles, who recorded her fifth shutout of the season, has allowed just one goal in her last six matches.
Kuhns and Sweeney were joined by senior defender Dani Oster and junior defender Mercedes Walters as four field players to play the entire match. "Our back four did a great job to minimize their opportunities," Erickson said.
Oregon out-shot Weber State, 20-13, while holding a small advantage in corner kicks at 4-3. Both teams were whistled for 10 fouls in the match.
UO was led statistically by junior forward Jen Stoltenberg who tallied a match-high seven shots, two of which were on goal. Bowns recorded four shots (two on goal), while Kuhns had three (two on goal). Freshman forward Julie Armstrong added two shots, while four other UO players took one shot.
WSU's Jessie Bradley had a team-high four shots, three on goal. Ritchie had six saves and allowed one goal in playing the duration of the match in goal for the Wildcats.
Oregon (8-2-1) opens Pac-10 Conference play next week at Pape' Field in Eugene with matches against California and Stanford. The Golden Bears, who were ranked No. 14 in the latest NSCAA/adidas Division I Soccer Rankings, will battle with UO on Friday night at 7 p.m. (PT). The Ducks will face No. 2 Stanford on Sunday, with match-time scheduled for 1 p.m.
