10/11/09 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. -- The top-ranked Stanford Cardinal defeated the University of Oregon soccer team 5-1 Sunday afternoon at Pape' Field in Eugene. The Ducks dropped to 8-4-1 overall and 0-2-0 in Pac-10 Conference play with the loss. Stanford improved to 13-0-0, 2-0-0 in league action.
"This is a great Stanford team who is worthy of a No. 1 ranking," Erickson said. "They have a great chance of going the whole way. Hopefully they will show the rest of the country why they are ranked No. 1."
Oregon's only score of the match came off a corner kick in the 25th minute, a header goal by freshman midfielder Lauren Thompson. Freshman midfielder Scout Libke took the corner with the right foot, sent a pass into the middle of the 18-yard box, where Thompson one-timed the header past SU goalkeeper Kira Maker. The goal was the first of Thompson's career at Oregon and Libke's second assist of the season.
"A positive note was Lauren Thompson playing well," Erickson said. "This was her first-ever start at Oregon. She's been injured and we haven't had her at full strength. It was great to get her out on the field and it was great for her to get the header goal."
The Cardinal out-shot the Ducks, 17-5, while holding a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks in the match. Stanford was whistled for 13 fouls to Oregon's three.
Five Oregon players recorded a shot in the contest, with Thompson and Mansfield recording shots on goal. Senior defender Danielle Sweeney, junior midfielder Kirstie Kuhns and freshman forward Julie Armstrong all took one shot.
Sophomore goalkeeper Cody Miles allowed five goals while recording one save in 67 minutes of action. Junior goalkeeper Tori Johnson had one save in 23 minutes off the bench.
Stanford forward Kelley O'Hara recorded a hat trick in the match to go with a match-high six shots, five of which were on goal. Her first goal came in the 17th minute, beating Miles one v. one after a build-up by Lindsay Taylor and Mariah Nogueira.
Three minutes later O'Hara struck again, this time a header goal off a crossing pass from Taylor. Stanford's third goal of the half came in the 23rd minute when Nogueira headed a ball forward to Taylor, who beat Miles with a shot from the right-side of the 18-yard box.
Oregon's goal came in the 25th minute, which concluded a stretch of eight minutes (from the 16-minute mark to the 24-minute mark) where four total goals were scored by the two teams.
Stanford scored two goals in the second half, both of which were unassisted. O'Hara completed her hat trick in the 58th minute. O'Hara, who penetrated down the right side past defenders into the 18-yard box, played a ball off of Miles that went in the direction of goal. UO senior defender Dani Oster headed it off the line for the team save, but into the possession of O'Hara who then scored into the empty net.
Stanford's Christen Press put the final goal on the board in the 62nd minute, an unassisted score where she lofted a shot from 25 yards away which went over the head of UO's Miles.
Eight Stanford players recorded shots in the match, led by O'Hara's match-high six shots. Taylor, Camille Levin and Courtney Verloo each added two shots. Maker played 64 minutes in goal, recording one save and one goal allowed. Lindsay Dickerson spelled Maker over the final 26 minutes, but did not face a shot.
