02/22/08 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. ? The University of Oregon softball team its Cathedral City Classic Friday opener vs. returning NCAA qualifier Long Island, 2-1, thanks to a complete game by freshman Brittany Rumfelt, while fellow frosh Monique Fuiava's double in the sixth led to the game-winning run.
The Ducks got out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when senior shortstop Lovena Chaput hit her team-leading third homer of the season over the right center field wall.
Long Island answered with its only run in the third inning, and put runners on first and second via a single and hit batsman. Rumfelt stuck out the next hitter looking, leadoff hitter Mariesha Marker, and after a wild pitch advanced both runners, the lead runner came home on a single to right field by the Blackbirds' third hitter, first baseman Vanessa Mejia.
The score remained 1-1 till the sixth inning, when UO freshman first baseman Monique Fuiava led off with a double down the right field line. Junior pinch runner Shelley Deadmond came around to score two batters later when senior third baseman Joanna Gail hit a grounder up the middle that deflected off the shortstop's glove into center field.
The win raised Rumfelt's record to 3-0 on the season, while Long Island's Blaire Porter dropped to 2-1. Rumfelt struck out three, walked none and gave up six hits and one earned run in her third complete game of the year and first seven-inning stint. Porter also pitched a complete game and allowed eight hits, one earned run, struck out six and walked two.
For UO, six of the first seven hitters in the lineup hit safely. Multi-hit afternoons were posted by Jenkins (2-4) and Fuiava (2-3), and others that had hits included freshman second baseman Cortney Kivett (1-3, 1 walk), Bryant (1-4), Chaput. (1-3, 1 run, 1RBI) and senior right fielder Kayleen Hudson (1-1, 1 walk).
Chaput's defense also keyed the Duck attack in the later innings. In the seventh inning, she climbed the ladder to barely snab a liner over her head for the first out of the inning. In the fifth, she quickly ranged to her left on a grounder near the bag to throw out the hitter at first. In the sixth, she went the other way deep in the hole to her left and fired to first base for the second out, then ended the inning when she went behind third base and lunged to trek down a floater for the final out.
The Ducks have one more game Friday night and take on returning College World Series participant and No. 2 Northwestern at approximately 7:15 pm.
