CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. ? In Friday's second day nightcap of the Cathedral City Classic, Northwestern ace and returning All-Region pick Lauren Delaney threw her second career no-hitter en route to a 6-0 win over Oregon.
The Wildcats (5-0) scored one run in the second, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and three more in the sixth off junior Duck starter Melissa Rice. The Colville, Wash., native Rice (1-3) pitched 5 1/3 innings, struck out four, walked three, and four of the seven runs were earned.
In relief, freshman Duck left-hander Brittany Rumfelt pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and struck out one, walked none and allowed no runs. In the fifth inning, the Lakeport. Calif., native came in with runners on first and third with one out and retired five straight batters, with the first batter knocking in a run on a sacrifice fly to deep left field.
Two Duck hitters reached base via walks ? junior left fielder Sari-Jane Jenkins and junior centerfielder Neena Bryant - and the latter nearly beat out a bunt in bottom of the seventh inning.
In the field, senior right fielder Kayleen Hudson earned a cheer from the Duck faithful on hand in the top of the sixth. With a 15-20 mph wind blowing from right to center field, she charged to her right 25 feet and fully extended herself to make the catch in right center field for the inning's second out.
Northwestern's top hitters were All-America junior shortstop Tammy Williams (2-4, 1 RBI) and centerfielder Kelly Dyer (2-3), and four others had hits.
On the mound, Delaney (4-0) struck out 17 Ducks ? one shy of the school record for a seven-inning game ? and walked two and faced 23 of a possible 21 batters.
Looking ahead, the Ducks (6-7) return Saturday for third-day action in the tournament near Palm Springs and face No. 8 Oklahoma at 10:30 a.m. and Michigan State at 1 p.m.
