02/23/08 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. ? University of Oregon starter Brittany Rumfelt pitched six scoreless innings, and senior Alicia Cook got the save in UO's 3-1 win Saturday vs. Michigan State at the Cathedral City Classic near Palm Springs.
The freshman from Lakeport, Calif., Rumfelt struck out two, walked none, and gave up five hits and one earned run. She was relieved in the seventh inning after the leadoff hitter singled to center, and Cook registered three straight outs to end the game.
Cook's save was her first of the season and third of her career after single saves in '07 and '05.
The Ducks gave Rumfelt an early lead when they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Junior left fielder Sari-Jane Jenkins opened with a single to center field, and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Two batters later, sophomore center fielder Neena Bryant also singled to centerfield to score Jenkins. Bryant advanced to second on the throw home, than scored on a single by freshman first baseman Monique Fuiava to center field.
The Ducks scored again in the top of the sixth inning after senior shortstop Lovena Chaput opened with a double to the right center field gap. Sophomore pinch runner Hannah Barril advanced to third on a fielder's choice, then scored on a base hit to the pitcher by senior third baseman Joanna Gail.
The Spartans' only run came with one out in the third inning after Traci Nicosia doubled down the left field line. After a single by Nikki Nicosia, Lindsey Hansen followed with a RBI single. Rumfelt then got a fielder's choice groundout to second base and a groundout to shortstop to end the inning with two runners still on base.
Michigan State starter Lesley Noel pitched a complete game and gave up eight hits and three runs - all earned - in her six innings of work, and struck out three and walked one.
Oregon raised its record to 8-7 Saturday with its second win of the day after Cook shutout No. 8 Oklahoma, 1-0, in the morning's first game, with UO's run courtesy of Fuiava's third homer of the season.
Looking ahead, the Ducks wrap up the tourney Sunday afternoon and face Pacific at 1 p.m. Live stats are available via the Duck softball schedule in the media column on the right side.
