Fuiava Homers Vs. No. 8 Oklahoma
02/23/08 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Freshman first baseman Monique Fuiava launched a fourth inning-homer, while senior pitcher Alicia Cook threw a 1-0 shutout as Oregon beat No. 8 Oklahoma in Saturday's first of two Cathedral City Classic games near Palm Springs.
In the fourth inning for UO, after Fuiava rocked the outside fastball over the right center field wall, senior third baseman Joanna Gail nearly duplicated the feat, but the left fielder jumped over the wall to barely make the catch.
On a similar play in the top of the sixth, Oklahoma appeared to tie the game when second baseman Traci Dickenson launched a shot to deep right center field, but centerfielder Neena Bryant retreated back to the wall, leaped backwards and came up with the catch before she fell on the collapsible right center field wall.
That same inning with two outs, the Sooners followed with consecutive hits to put runners on first and second. Cook then got down 3-0 on left fielder Haley Anderson, but came back with two strikes before Anderson lined to senior right fielder Kayleen Hudson for the final out.
Altogether, Oklahoma stranded 11 runners and at least one every inning, including two more again in the seventh. With two outs, consecutive Sooners got on via a walk and hit by pitch. However, Cook, struck out Dickenson looking on a 1-2 pitch to end the game.
The Sooners also left two on in the first inning when senior shortstop Lovena Chaput leaped to snag a liner up the middle for the final out. OU stranded single runners on in the second, third and fifth innings, and also had two on again in the fourth but Gail leaped to catch a hard, one-bouncer over her head and fired to first for the final out.
Cook (3-4) pitched her third shutout of the season and second over a returning NCAA Super Regional qualifier after she blanked South Carolina, 3-0, last Saturday in Las Vegas, along with a 2-0 win over Cal State Northridge in Palm Springs two weekends ago.
At the plate for UO Saturday morning, four Ducks hit safely ? Fuiava (1-3), freshman twins Cortney (1-3) and Ashley Kivett (1-2) and Gail (1-2).
For Oklahoma (10-3), starter Jadyn Smith (3-1) pitched 4 1/3 innings, before being relieved by the team's ace D.J. Mathis who allowed no runs in the final 1 2/3 innings.
Looking ahead, the Ducks (7-7) face Michigan State immediately afterwards at 1 p.m., then wrap up the tourney vs. Pacific tourney Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
