CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - In Friday evening's Cathedral Classic opener, the UO softball team lost 8-4 to No. 10 Baylor after the Bears scored one run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to break a 4-4 fifth inning tie.
After Baylor scored runs in the first and second innings, Oregon went up 4-2 in the top half of the third inning with a four-run explosion off Baylor starter Jenny Isham.
UO senior catcher Amie Morris led off the inning with a single to center field, and after a walk to junior left fielder Sari-Jane Jenkins and a bunt single by freshman second baseman Cortney Kivett, junior center centerfielder Neena Bryant knocked in two runs with a single. Senior shortstop Lovena Chaput added another run with a flair pop to right field that died in the light breeze and fell 12 feet past the edge of the infield. Bryant scored when the next batter, senior right fielder Kayleen Hudson, reached on an error by the second baseman.
In the bottom half of the same inning, Baylor responded with two more runs to draw even, 4-4, and after a scoreless fourth inning, then went ahead for good in the fifth.
Five of UO's starters had hits ? Bryant (1-4, 2 RBI), Chaput (1-3, 1 RBI), Gail (1-3) and Morris (1-3) - while Jenkins walked twice.
Oregon starter Alicia Cook (2-4) pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up 12 hits, struck out three, walked one, and four of Baylor's eight runs were earned.
Baylor's Isham (3-0) pitched the complete game and struck out three, walked two, and all four of her runs allowed were earned.
Baylor's Player of the Year candidate Kirsten Shortridge went 3-4 in the lead-off slot with 3 runs and one RBI, and BU's second and fourth hitters also had multiple hits, left fielder Tiffany Wesley (2-4, 2 runs) and catcher Courtney Oberg (2-3, 1 RBI). First baseman Jordan Daniels also went 1-4 and had a team-high 2 RBI.
Oregon fell to 5-6 on the season, while the returning College World Series participant Baylor improved to 6-1.
