Ducks Take Two at Cardinal Classic
02/14/26 | Softball
SARATOGA, Calif. — No. 15 Oregon came from behind to edge Cal State Fullerton, 5-4 in the first game, and then dominated both at the plate and in the circle in a 9-0, run-rule victory over Kentucky Saturday in the Cardinal Classic, played at West Valley College's Viking Field.
With the first game tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Addison Amaral drove in the go-ahead run against the Titans with an RBI single down the third base line.
In the second game, Taylour Spencer struck out 10 in a one-hit shutout of the Wildcats. A four-run fourth highlighted Oregon's nine-run, 11-hit offensive outburst.
"I loved the way we played both games today," said coach Melyssa Lombardi, whose team improved to 5-3 on the season. "I loved how we came out of the gates, kept scoring runs. We totally battled in the first game. In the second game, we picked right up where we left off at the end of the first game."
The games were part of the Cardinal Classic, which was originally scheduled to be played at Stanford, but due to permitting issues at the Cardinal's new stadium, the event was moved to different venues in the South Bay.
REMAINING CARDINAL CLASSIC SCHEDULE
Sun., Feb. 15, 12 p.m. Oregon vs. Stanford West Valley College (Saratoga, Calif.)
How It Happened – Game 1: Fullerton (4-5) scored runs in the second and third innings for a 2-0 lead.
The Ducks answered with four runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead 4-2.
Oregon loaded the bases with no outs on a hit and two walks. Elon Butler then walked to force in a run. Rylee McCoy followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2.
Two outs later, Ayanna Shaw singled into left field to score Amari Harper and give the Ducks a 3-2 lead.
With Butler on third, Shaw broke toward second and proceeded to get into a run down that allowed Butler to score from third before Shaw was tagged out.
Fullerton tied the game at 4-4 on a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning before Amaral drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the frame.

Braiesey Rosa singled and Shaw reached on an error. Amaral drove a 1-2 pitch into left field to score pinch runner Presley Lawton from second as the Ducks moved back into the lead, 5-4.
"It was a lot of fun doing that in front of all my family and friends," said Amaral, who is from nearby Salinas, Calif. "It was a great team win overall. To get runners on so early with no outs it allowed me to do my thing at the plate.
"I absolutely love this team," said Amaral. "They're everything to me. Transferring here, they've been such a family so to be able to do that for them was just a lot of fun."
Lyndsey Grein made that advantage stand up with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh. Grein (2-3) picked up the win after throwing 4.0 innings in relief. She allowed two runs on two hits and struck out seven.
How It Happened – Game 2: For the second time in three games, Oregon scored in every inning to pull away from Kentucky (6-3).
The Ducks struck twice in the top of the first.
Kaylynn Jones led off with an infield single and scored on Amari Harper's double down the left field line. Harper moved to third on a fly out and then scored on Rylee McCoy's sacrifice fly.
In the second inning, Jones drove in Addison Amaral, who had reached on a fielder's choice, for a 3-0 lead.
Oregon scored four runs on four hits in the third inning.
Elon Butler led off with a single and Rylee McCoy walked. Ayanna Shaw reached on a bunt single to load the bases.
Braiesey Rosa then drove in two with a single into left.
Amaral sacrificed runners to second and third to set up the Ducks' final two runs of the inning. Emma Cox scored Shaw on a sacrifice fly, and Katie Flannery brought Rosa home from second with a single down the left field line as Oregon's lead ballooned to 7-0.
"We're definitely powerful through the lineup, but then if we need to do situational hitting we know how to do that as well," said Lombardi. "It's about understanding what we need from you, getting it done and letting the next woman come up. I really saw that with (Amaral) and the rest of the group today.
Shaw again got Oregon going in the fourth inning. She singled and then took two bases on a passed ball. She scored on an error at second on Rosa's grounder.
The biggest blast of the day came from Cox, who homered to left to lead off the fifth inning to cap the scoring.

Spencer ended the game by striking out the side in the bottom of the fifth. She also fanned two batters in the first, third and fourth innings to set a new career high with 10 strikeouts.
The only hit Spencer surrendered was a third inning single to Allie Blum.
"Loved Taylour on the mound," said Lombardi. "She was really, really good. Loved her change of speed, just constantly pounding the zone."

She's 7-for-8 (.875) with two RBI, a sacrifice bunt and two stolen bases … Kaylynn Jones is hitting .556 for the tournament (5-for-9), while Elon Butler is at .444 (4-for-9) with a double a homer and three RBI … Oregon and Fullerton will play for a third time next week at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic … The Ducks have won three in a row against the Titans for just the second time in program history … It was just the second time in 11 meetings that Oregon shut out Kentucky … The Ducks defeated the Wildcats in back-to-back NCAA Super Regionals (2017, 2018) to advance to the Women's World College Series both years … Emma Cox picked off a runner in the third inning against Fullerton.
