Duck Soccer Falls at CS Fullerton, 5-0
09/28/03 | Women's Soccer
FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of Oregon lost its second game in Los Angeles on the weekend to an NCAA veteran, as Cal State Fullerton won 5-0 on its own turf Sunday.
The Titans scored twice late in the first half on a goal by Kandace Wilson at 41:14 and Paige Morgan at 44:30, thanks to assists by Marlene Sandoval and Wilson, respectively. In the second half, CSF's Morgan scored again on a header at 49:42 off a throw-in, followed by a score by Wilson (on an Erin Shelton assist) at 77:16, and a final goal by Amy Stanley (assist to Kate Brunet) at 81:04.
"We started out really well, and had three good scoring chances early," Oregon coach Bill Steffen said. "Unfortunately they only had two chances in the first half and capitalized on both. They scored again early in the second half on a mistake on our part, and that third goal hurt our concentration for the rest of the game. It was a frustrating pair of games, but we need to recollect ourselves and get ready for next weekend."
Individually for the Ducks, freshmen Sabrina DeMonte and Andrea Valadez each put up two shots, and Oregon's two shots on goal came from sophomore Cristan Higa and junior Erin Engelhardt. In goal for Oregon, redshirt sophomore Domenique Lainez allowed five goals and made one save in 84 minutes of play, and senior Mary Etter played the final six minutes and didn't post any saves.
Oregon outshot CSF 5-4 in the first half, but were outshot in the second period, 5-2 - giving CSF a 9-7 final advantage. The two teams each logged 3 corner kicks, and Oregon held a 9-5 advantage in fouls.
Three Titans - Amy Stanley, Kandace Wilson and Paige Morgan - tied for the home team best in shots (2), and Wilson and Morgan each had two shots on goal.
The Ducks witnessed five yellow cards Sunday, one each to CSF's Emmy Dokulil, Kate Brunet and Ashley O'Brien, and UO's Kelly Baird and Nicole Garbin.
Sunday's match was the fourth straight against NCAA veterans from the past two seasons - A&M, SMU, Loyola Marymount and CSF - a streak that climbs to five next weekend with returning NCAA champion Portland.
The Ducks host the Pilots on , Fri., Oct. 3, then take on the Weber State Wildcats, Sun., Oct. 5 at 1 pm in their last non-conference weekend of action.
