Soccer Upends Sacramento State 3-1, Remains Unbeaten

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Redshirt sophomore forward Nicole Garbin scored two goals and assisted on another as Oregon moved to 5-0 for the first time in school history with a 3-1 defeat of Sacramento State Sunday afternoon.
Garbin put the Ducks on the scoreboard with a successful penalty kick in the final minute of the first half - 44:20 to be exact. She then got the game-winner early in the second half at 50:03 on an assist on a corner kick from junior defender Christine Mintz.
"It was a very physical game," Oregon head coach Bill Steffen said, "and we didn't play a great first half. Our touches were off a little early, but we managed to regroup. We picked up our execution in the second half, and had more chances than showed in the final score. We need to be better at finishing our chances. We got to play a lot of players in today, so that was a good thing. Carlie (Ashcraft) had a good game, and Nicole (Garbin) did very well and her on-field personality is evolving and coming out more and more. Mele (French) and Andrea (Valadez) were also strong up top. Sabrina (DeMonte) made her first start and did very well. Altogether, it was a good, all-around, resourceful effort. Sac State is a physical team and we couldn't play through them, so we had to adjust and play more around them."
Sacramento State (1-3) closed the score to 2-1 on Kelly Novak's goal in the 66th minute. But sophomore midfielder Caitlin Gamble added an insurance goal for Oregon in the 82nd minute - the second season netter and third career for the Salt Lake City native. Garbin assisted on Gamble's goal to give her five points on the match -- one off the school record of Chalise Baysa vs. Tennessee in 1998 (6=3 goals).
In only her 23rd game as a Duck, Garbin also moved to second all-time for the Ducks record with her sixth career game-winning goal. The sophomore from Wailuku, Hawaii, is one behind Baysa (7).
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Domenique Lainez made five saves to record her fifth win of the regular season - all of which have she has allowed one goal or fewer.
The Ducks ended with advantage in shots (19-10), corner kicks (9-3), and Sac State led in saves (7-4) and fouls (16-9). The Ducks' shot tally was their second-highest of the season (behind 23 vs. Boise State), and they also tied their season high in corner kicks (also with nine vs. Boise State).
The Ducks next travel to the SMU Tournament in Dallas to face Texas A&M on Fri., Sept. 19 at 5 pm (CT/3 pm PT), and then play the Mustangs Sun., Sept. 21 at noon (CT/ 10 am PT). The Aggies (4-1), an Elite Eight finisher last season, are ranked top-six in three of the four major college polls, and suffered their first loss after a 1-0 loss to No. 1 North Carolina Sunday. The Mustangs (5-2) are receiving votes in two polls after making the NCAA Sweet 16 last year.
