Defending National Champion USC Defeats Duck Volleyball

EUGENE ? For the second consecutive match, the University of Oregon volleyball team set a new season-best. In a 30-28, 30-22, 30-16 loss to the defending national champion USC Trojans, the Ducks controlled the play at the net and had a season-high 12.5 blocks one night after setting a season-best in digs against No. 9 UCLA.
"After last night, the team honestly believed they can play with anybody," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "When you've played a team once before you realize it's just volleyball and you're not going to be surprised by what they do. Our blockers had great eye focus and hand position and have been improving all season. These matches have made us better."
Freshman middle blocker Kristen Bitter and sophomore outside hitter Jaclyn Jones had eight and seven blocks, respectively while Jodi Bell, Sarah Mason and Kelly Russell added three each. Bitter is currently seventh in the Pac-10 in conference matches only, averaging 1.04 blocks per game. Her season-high is 10.
"A lot of our success was from last night, but it's also been building in practice," Bitter said. "We've been grinding away. We know that we can be a good blocking team, it's just a matter of bringing it to the match and that's what we did."
Junior Lauren Westendorf and Mason led Oregon's offense with nine kills each with Russell adding eight and Jones five. Westendorf hit .368 and added two digs.
USC was led by April Ross and Emily Adams, who had 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
The Ducks remain home next week, hosting Oregon State in the Civil War Thursday evening at 7 p.m.
