No. 23 Oregon improves to 8-1 ahead of Sunday’s home match against Oregon State.

EUGENE, Ore. — The No. 23 Oregon volleyball team beat Portland State in straight sets (25-19, 25-21, 25-20) Thursday night at Matthew Knight Arena. Junior outside hitter Sjakkie Donkers tallied a match-high 12 kills to lead the UO offense for a second-consecutive match.

The Ducks, 8-1 this season, are back on their home floor Sunday against Oregon State (1 p.m., B1G+). Single-match and season tickets for all UO home matches are currently on sale.

Donkers added five digs, two service aces and a block to her stat line, and was joined in double figures by Valentina Vaulet who put down 10 kills against Portland State. Alanah Clemente recorded eight kills, four blocks, two digs and an ace. Iva Sucurovic also had four blocks while libero Reese Sheppard had 14 digs.

Fifth-year setter Marina Crownover had 31 assists and nine digs.

How It Happened: Portland State (4-6) controlled the early stages of the match, jumping out to an 8-3 lead before eventually going ahead 17-13 after an Oregon attack error. The Ducks responded with an eight-point surge with Donkers at the service line, taking a 21-17 lead after a kill by Sucurovic. Overall, Oregon ended the opener on a 12-2 run and took the 1-0 match lead when a PSU attack landed long.

The Ducks out-hit Portland State, .323-.100, in the first set. Sucurovic and Vaulet each had two kills in that decisive push.

The second set featured 14 ties and seven lead changes. With the score tied at 20, the home team put together a three-point push highlighted by two kills from Donkers and a Donkers-Sucurovic block. The Vikings broke the run with a kill but Oregon went on to grab the 2-0 lead with another Donkers' kill.

It was Oregon with the quick start—up 9-3—in the third set but Portland State steadied and began to chip away before tying the score at 17-all with an ace. As they did in the second, the Ducks answered right away. The ensuing four-point run included kills from Crownover, Donkers and Vaulet along with a second ace from Donkers. On its first match, Clemente and Dalia Virlan combined for a block to secure the sweep.

Notable: Won 16 of the past 17 against Portland State dating back to 2004 … 5-0 against Portland State at Matthew Knight Arena … Vaulet has 10+ kills in seven of nine matches this season … all five primary attackers had at least five kills … out-hit Portland State, .323-.100, in the first set; .231 to .119 overall … combined for six service aces; at least six aces in six of nine matches.
