04/02/26 | Track and Field
The Ducks will compete at Stanford, UC San Diego and UNLV beginning Friday morning.
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon track and field team kicks off the first full month of the outdoor season with three meets beginning Friday morning with the throws group in La Jolla, Calif., for the Triton Invitational. The Ducks' distance and jumps crews will compete at the Stanford Invitational while the team is sending sprinters to the UNLV Rebel Elite.
The UO throwers are coming off a successful PNW Open where the group collected wins from Ben Smith and Marie Josee Bovele-Linaka in the discus and Alicia Khunou in the shot put. Bovele-Linaka is currently second in the Big Ten with her season-opening toss of 54.54m/178-8 while Smith is third among Big Ten men with his measure of 58.30m/191-3 in Corvallis.
Smith and Kobe Lawrence will also compete in the shot put for the first time since NCAA Indoors where they finished fourth and second, respectively. The men's discus and shot put are scheduled for Saturday.
The javelin and men's pole vault will be contested Friday at the Triton meet. Pat Vialva (67.22m/220-6) and Greyson Glivinski (50.38m/165-3) are the Ducks' top-performers in the javelin entering the meet.
Day one of the Stanford Invitational will feature several sections of the 1500, 5,000 and 10,000 meters. The invitational sections of those events are scheduled for the evening beginning at 6:34 p.m. with the women's 1500 meters where Ali Ince is set for her outdoor debut for the Ducks.
Juliet Cherubet and Simeon Birnbaum are slated to run in the invitational sections of the 5,000 meters beginning with the women's race at 8:13 p.m. That will be followed by top flights of the 10,000 where school-record holder Diana Cherotich will begin her outdoor campaign. The men's invitational section will feature Evan Bishop, Evan Burke and Luke Tewalt in his UO debut.
Friday's schedule in Stanford will also feature the top flights of the long jump for Titouan Bizet for the men and Loren Webster for the women.
Before a full slate of events Saturday in Las Vegas, members of the UO sprints group will compete over 200 meters beginning at 5:30 p.m. MT.
PJ Ize-Iyamu posted a lifetime best of 20.67 at UCLA last weekend, a mark that currently ranks fourth in the Big Ten and among the top 15 nationally. With that time, he moved to within .03 of cracking the UO top 10 in the event.
Reigning NCAA champion Aaliyah McCormick is set to make her season debut in the 100-meter hurdles Saturday 12:10 p.m. MT. Kai Graves-Blanks will take on the 110-meter hurdles for a second-consecutive weekend after his NCAA-leading time of 13.47 at the Jim Bush Legends Invitational last weekend.
