Birnbaum Wins Invitational 5,000 at Stanford
04/03/26 | Track and Field
The Ducks combined for four wins and six top-10 program marks Friday.
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon track and field team collected four wins and six UO top-10 performances across three meets Friday. Simeon Birnbaum won the invitational section of the 5,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational while Pat Vialva and Greyson Glivinski swept the men's and women's javelin titles at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif.
The UO men also got a win from Tayson Echohawk in section three of the 5,000 and a trio of top-10 times from Evan Burke, Evan Bishop and Luke Tewalt in the top section of the 10,000 meters.
Birnbaum stopped the clock in a personal-best time of 13:19.73 to take first place in a loaded field at Stanford. With the help of a 56.47 final lap, the UO junior became the No. 6 performer in UO history, good for the first new top-10 entry since the 2021 season. Birnbaum was more than a second clear of the field, followed by Geoffrey Kirwa (13:21.49) of Louisville and Nick Busienei (13:21.90) of Arkansas.
Birnbaum's time also broke the meet record, eclipsing the previous mark of 13:23.61 set by Stanford's Ky Robinson in 2022.
In the first win of the day, freshman Greyson Glivinski posted a day's best of 50.67m/166-3 for the win and a season best. She paced a 1-2 Oregon finish along with fellow freshman Hayden Williams-Downing (49.03m/160-10). Glivinski finished the day with two throws beyond 50 meters.
Vialva used a clutch final throw to move from second to first for the victory at the Triton Invitational. In the sixth round, he let go of a season-best toss of 69.57m/228-3 to surpass Iowa State's Justice Miller in the overall standings. Vialva added more than six feet to his previous day's best from the second round of throws.
Also in La Jolla, the duo of Alicia Khunou and Marie Josee Bovele-Linaka continued their ascent of the program's top-10 list in the discus. Khunou (56.27m/184-7) moved to sixth—from 10th—on the Ducks' all-time list and Bovele-Linaka (55.25m/181-3) went to No. 7 on that list, up from eighth. Khunou and Bovele-Linaka finished Friday's competition in second and fourth, respectively.
Burke (27:57.04) and Bishop (27:57.98) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the invitational 10K and became just the fourth and fifth runners in program history to dip below 28 minutes in the event. Tewalt, in his Oregon debut, crossed the finish in 28:00.52, good for 12th overall, and is now the No. 6 performer on the UO all-time list.
Habton Samuel of New Mexico won the event in 27:30.51.
In the Ducks' lone action of the UNLV Rebel Elite, Grant Valley (20.74w) and Amirah Shaheed (23.75) were the team's top performers in the 200 meters. Valley was third in the men's event while Shaheed equaled her personal best to finish eighth overall, and sixth among collegians.
Notable: Section two of the women's 200 meters at the UNLV Rebel Elite featuring three UO women—Micaela De Mello, Lily Jones and Brazil Neal—was not properly timed due to a timing malfunction.
Ticket packages for the Ducks' outdoor home schedule are currently on sale. The team is set to host the Oregon Team Invitational (April 18) and Oregon Twilight (May 8), along with the NCAA Championships in June.
