Ducks Drop Game Two at UCSB
03/28/26 | Baseball
GOLITA, Calif. — After Oregon tied the game at two in the top of the fifth inning, UC Santa Barbara went to the bullpen and proceeded to retire the final 13 Ducks' batters faced, to even the nonconference series with an 8-2 win at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 2-0 with two outs in the fifth inning, Oregon (22-5) strung together four consecutive singles to tie the game forcing the Gauchos (16-8) to the bullpen. UCSB lefty Cole Tryba (1-2) came into the game and retired Angel Lay to strand a pair of Ducks on the bases. Tryba was just getting started as he put together four straight 1-2-3 innings to end the game.
How It Happened: Sloppy play on defense put the Ducks in an early hole with UCSB scoring two unearned runs in the second inning. After retiring the first two batters in the inning, Oregon starter Collin Clarke (4-2) hit the next batter before giving up a single to the nine-hole hitter.
It looked like Clarke would get out of the inning when he got Rowan Kelly to hit a soft grounder on the right side of the infield. Second baseman Ryan Cooney charged the ball and threw hard to first to try and get the speedy Kelly. The throw was a little high and went off the tip of first baseman Gabe Miranda's glove allowing a runner to score from second. With the error putting runners on second and third, the Gauchos added a second run on a Clarke wild pitch.
Neither team scored again until the fifth when Oregon strung together the four consecutive two-out hits. Cooney started the rally with a base hit up the middle and moved to third on a Jax Gimenez hit through the right side. Dominic Hellman cut the lead to one with a base hit to right field, before Drew Smith tied the game with a base hit up the middle.
UCSB regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring twice with two outs. The Gauchos tacked on four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Box Score Notes: Gimenez extended his hitting streak to 14 games, tying Brennan Milone (2022), Colby Shade (2022) and Tyler Baumgartner (2013) for the seventh longest streak in the modern era of Oregon baseball … Gimenez extended his reached base streak to 17 games … The two runs are the second fewest the Ducks have scored this season, behind only a 2-1 loss at Purdue on March 7 … The Ducks did not hit a home run for just the fourth time this season.
On Deck: The rubber match in the series is Sunday at 12:05 p.m. (ESPN+).
