Midwest Weekend Off to Slow Start
03/26/26 | Women's Lacrosse
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Oregon lacrosse team fell behind early and could not recover after hanging within reach of No. 25 ranked Ohio State after the first quarter in a double-digit loss.
The Ducks (6-5, 0-3 Big Ten) struggled to contain the Ohio State's (7-4, 2-2 Big Ten) offensive attack after holding the Buckeyes' to just three goals in the opening 15 minutes. Oregon was able to generate two scores, but was not enough to put a dent in the 20 goals from the home team.
Junior captain Avery Young brought the Ducks early hope with her score in the first quarter but was not able to generate enough momentum to stop the onslaught from the No. 25 ranked team. Emma Ing put a chip in the score with a goal of her own in the final minutes as Oregon showed a relentless effort throughout the game.
How It Happened: Ohio State scored just once before Young netted the equalizer in the first quarter. Sophomore goalkeeper Kate Shields made her first start since the Ducks faced Eastern Michigan. Shields had her strongest effort in the first, allowing just three goals while making four saves.
Young's goal was Oregon's bright spot of the first half, as Ohio State gained control and rattled off eight unanswered scores to end the period. The potent offense was able to force a running clock just minutes into the second half of play.
Francesca Viteritti came in during the third quarter in an attempt to limit the damage caused by Ohio State's attackers, but played just one quarter and was unable to record a save. After returning to the cage in the final period, Shields totaled nine saves in 45 minutes while facing 33 shots from the Buckeyes.
Ing was finally able to penetrate the Ohio State defense in the fourth quarter, proving the Ducks relentless effort, despite being outshot 33-11.
Notable: Nine saves were the most by Shields this season, just one short of her season high 10 set last year … Jenae Sperling, Anna Simmons and Lexi Jenkins each won two draw controls … The Duck defense caused seven turnovers, led by Shea Stone who forced two.
Up Next: The Ducks remain in the Midwest to face No. 6 ranked Michigan at 10 a.m. PT on Sunday, March 29.
