Romero's Sixth Win Fuels Runner-Up Finish
03/24/26 | Women's Golf
FORT WORTH, Texas – Oregon's Kiara Romero claimed her second individual win of the season and extended her program record with the sixth of her career on Tuesday at the Charles Schwab Women's Collegiate Invitational, firing a 3-under 67 in the final round to win by five strokes at Colonial Country Club.
Romero entered the final round in a tie for first at 3-under par before running away with medalist honors, making four birdies against just one bogey in the final round. The junior now has two more individual wins than any other player in program history.
"What can you say about Kiara Romero at this point?" head coach Derek Radley said. "She's the best player in college golf and the undisputed No. 1 amateur in the world. Every time she steps on the golf course you expect her to do something special and she just continues to deliver for this team time and time again. This was another awesome win for her and she did a great job once again of being a leader for the Ducks."
Led by Romero, the No. 7 Ducks put together their best round of the week with a 2-under 278 to move up two spots and finish as the team runner-up at 11-over par, finishing behind only No. 1 Stanford (+8). Playing in a stacked 13-team field, UO finished ahead of four other top-10 teams and seven other top-25 opponents.
Oregon extended its streak of consecutive top-five finishes to 20 tournaments dating back to the start of the 2024-25 season. The Ducks earned their fourth runner-up showing of the season and have now placed in the top two 34 times since Radley took over in 2018-19.
"Really pleased with our team's effort and performance this week," Radley said. "This was a very good field with a lot of teams that will be at the NCAA Championships later this spring. I thought we did a good job of battling through the 36-hole day yesterday and then did some really nice things out there today to move up and take second. We're starting to figure out who we are as a team and I'm excited to see how we can continue to improve as the postseason gets closer."
How it Happened: Romero wasted no time breaking the tie at the top of the leaderboard, making birdie on her first hole of the day. A bogey at No. 5 brought her back to even par, but she immediately got that stroke back with a birdie on No. 6.
It was mistake-free golf the rest of the way for the top-ranked amateur in the world. She made five straight pars before draining back-to-back birdies at No. 12 and No. 13, and then finished out with five more pars to secure the individual win.
In addition to winning her sixth career tournament, Romero's 11 birdies for the week also moved her into a tie for No. 4 all-time at Oregon with 341 in her career.
Romero was joined under par by freshman Sophie Han, who put together her best round of the week with a 1-under 69. Han got off to a blazing start with three straight birdies to open the round and then hung on to stay under par.
Han earned her second top-10 finish of her career, tying for ninth overall at 3 over to give Oregon two players in the top 10.
Sophomore Tong An also enjoyed her best round of the tournament, making four birdies en route to an even-par 70 to move up and claim a top-20 finish in a tie for 19th (+7).
Darae Chung and Shyla Singh each came in with 2-over 72s to complete Oregon's counting scores, and sophomore Annika Ishiyama closed with a 4-over 74 while competing as an individual.
